Referring to the death of Mr. John M'Oarvie Smith, best known as the scientist who presented to she Statu his secret of making anthrax vaccine, and who died suddenly at his home at AVoollahra, on September 6, at the age of 74, the "Sydney ilorning Herald' 1 says: "Anthrax was then a deadly scourge among the cattle and sheep of New South Wales, and the restless scientist attacked the problem. Pasteur had discovered a vaccine-'which would check the disease, but it would not keep, and was therefore practically useless. After long experiment Mr. M'Garvie Smith evolved a vaccine that was capable of preservation for ail indefinite period, and it has since been used with complete success. Anthrax is ho longer a terror to pastoralists, as shown by t.he result of the vaccination of something like 23,000,000 sheep. The importance of Mr. M'Garvie Smith's discovery cannot be over-esti-mated. For instance, men working among animals suffering from anthrax, or handling the wool and skins of sheep, or cattle so alfected, are liable to contract the deadly • disease. The vaccine has reduced those risks to a minimum. In addition to- giving the secret formula to. the country—the value of which it is difficult to assess, but wjiich the scientist- himself placed at £1,500,000—Mr. M'Garvie Smith endowed the new institute to Mie extent of £10,000, and also presented to the institute his fine laboratory and equift ment, estimated to be worth alone several thousands of pounds.
