He went to the United States in bis boyhood, find •was educated at n Catholic Sohool in St. Paul, Minnesota, later studied thein Franco, and wfis -ordained n, priest in 1801. He was chaplain, to the Cth Minnesota Regiment during tho Civil War. Ho succeeded to the See of St. Paul in 1884, and was named Archbishop in May,'lßßs.]
