TEACHING METHODS OF UNIVERSITIES. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christciiurclj, September 25. At tho Education Conference, Dr. Chilton (Professorial Board) presented a paper on "The Modern University," . dealing with .the history of university institutions. With reference to teaching methods, lie suggested that lectures- should lie typewritten, duplicated, and distributed to students beforehand, KO that the lecture hour could be devoted to. answers, to ques'tions and explaining difficulties. In tho discussion which followed, it was stated that small staffing militated not only against research work, but against cx- ' tension classes. ' The conference, resolved that tlio Government be asked to give a grant to university colleges to put workers' edlv rational associations' tutorial classes on a more satisfactory basis; that the I)e----i partmeut bu asked to institute a Dominion grading scheme for all manual instructors, so that they be paid in tho samp manner as teachers of primary schools. .
