OTAKI MEETING DETROIT WINS BIG HANDICAP (From Our Special Correspondent.) Olaiii, September 22. Tlus Otaki meeting was held to-day in glorious weather, und before a large crowd. A fcaturo of llic meeting was the promptitude with which the evenis wore run off. This was much • appreciated after, the long delays at Dnnnevirke and | llawera. There was soma very line racing, and in the big event lioadu only separated the placed horsey. The starting was unirormly good, and .Mr. Itarley has never licoii seen to heller, advantage. The tntalisator handled .£25.364 fjr eight rnecs, against £19,912 Tor seven races last year. In the opening event- 80-Focp had most supporters. The favourite was welt placed behind the. leaders io the turn, hut she | was making heavy weafher of H. and could only llnish t'ourth. ' Galore lud for three furlongs, when Demos took charge. Cyrcsian caino fast from the uome turn, and the leader hud to be ridden out to win. Jlyllus was <i length \iway, and thoTi came Uo-Pocp and Astropitel. Sardinia was prominent in ihc straight, hut did not see it out. The two top-weights I failed to go the pace set b.v the leaders, ' and were in trouble the whole way. First Line and Transmission were withdrawn from the Dominion Day Handicap, twelve horses facing the harrier. At the close, of the machine Willys Knight was a better favourite than Torchlight. Classification and Mill Queen were the quickest to begin, and they carried on the running to the half-mile, where Mill Queen fell back. Classification continued on in front, and, ridden out, he beat the favourite by a length. Close up came Matatua, with idle Talk and Torchlight next. Focman and King's Park were tho best baoked in the Steeplechase, but the former failed badly, and King's Park came down over Hoatu at the nix-furlongs post. Patariki made the running for a mile, when Waioture dashed out, and soon put a big break on the field. She ran home an easy winner from Gywime, who easily beat Bolliu. Juan was a. neck away in fourth place. Wallace Young, rider or lloatii, broke several ribs. but. S Iteid was not hurl. King's Park broke his back and had to ba destroyed. Sweet Tippcrnry <md Ladify were llio withdrawals from the bis handicap, which was a- good betting race, and was regarded as very open. Form I'd finished favourite, with Devotion second choice. Jtydrus led Devotion and AH Over passing tho stand the first time, but going out of the straight Kiltess joined Hydros, and tho pair put a, break on the others. At tho iliree furlongs Drank Dclaval loo'k charge, and led into the straight, where All Over .joined issue. At. the distance Detroit came on tho outside, und in an exciting finish the-trio passed the judge in a line. Detroit got the verdict, with Kiltess second, and All Over third.. Devotion. Orleans, nnd'llydriis were the next to finish. Form Dp and Mascot ran badly. Persian Prinrc was the best backed <:f the very poor lot that contested tho Stewards' Hack Handicap: Ahika und Ocoasioii set <i fast pace, and soon strung out" tho field. Oce-asion led into the straight, but Ahika finished ihc stronger, ond won by a length. Utuwai was a neck away in third .place, and Blighly weighed in" for-fourth place. H. flray on Persian Prince got put on to tho fence, and hurt his foot, which injury prevented him from riding again during the day. -Sardinia, and Hydros were saddled up a second time in the Wetter TTandienp, and thev carried the bulk or the. public support. Tho winner turned up in Revocation, who took charge at the home turn, and won by a length. The two favourites filled tho tumor places. There was a, big field .in the Maiden Plate, and after good belting Kipling finished up favourite. He drew No. 4 at the barrier, and began smartly, but Bonny Briar and Cotillion headed him into the straight. Here the lenders swung out. and the favourite slipped up on the fence, mid in a good (inish won by a length rrom Cotillion, who was coupled with Stirrup Cop. Bonny Briar was close up third. For the concluding event Willys Knight went, out favourite. lie had every, chance to score, but at the fini-di went under to Maim, who had got. u bad run earlier in the (lav. end Consultation. Talitha and tho latter led to Hie turn, where the fnvourite joined in. but at tho finish Mann slipped up on the outside, and won by n. neck from Consultation, who beat tho favourite by a head. BIPLANE'S FAILURE
SYDNEY PRESS COMMENT. By Telcgrapli-.Press Atiociatioh.-Copyright Sydney, September 23. Tho- "Herald" says: "liipliiitu shaiieu most disappointingly." 'The "Telegraph" says "The racing produced several surprises. The defeat of Pinmarl; was bad enough, but -worse- ivas to follow in the defeat of Biplane. Re was badly left through swinging out sideways when the barrier lifted, and he was last to get away. Re ran out wide making the turn, but made up sufficient ground ot. the entrance to tho straight to give him' a chance. Once in the straight, however, he could make no impression on the leaders, and continued to drop hack."
STUD DISPERSALS
ANOTHER ESTABLISHMENT DISBANDED When the Merton Stud was sold by miction last week it, constituted the third Australian stud that had ben sold under the liammer this year—and the war can bo said to have been tho main factor in connection with (he dispersal. The two previous breeding establishments lo be sold this year were the Segenhoe and Shipley Stud, owned' by Mr. W. Brown and Mr. S. Green respectively. The mainstuy of Mr. E. Ecginalil White's Merton Stud was the French sire, Kcnilworlh. While racing in France Kenilworth was one of the best stayers of his time, winning such races as Prix lininbow, run over a distonce of, three miles and a furlong. Tho breeding of Kenilworth is as follows:—Dr.- li. Kenilworth (bred in Franco in 1905, by Childwick (winner of Csarovitcli and Limekiln Stakes) from Kizil Konrgan (winner of over 20.000 in stakes), by Ommnn II (winner of the French Derby l from Kasbah ffcencli Oaks). Kenilworth's stock the last fjur seasons have won for him 29,300 sovs, and during the season 1917-18 no fewer than 76 races were won by his progeny. The best of the French horse's stock is undoubtedly Wolaroi, wiio has won the V.Jt.C. Derby. A.J.O. Breeders' Plate, A.J.C. Champagne Stakes, and also proved to be «- good wcight-for-age, performer. Unfortunately last season tliere was some difficulty experienced in getting the black horse to train on, but it is expected that he will be seen out. at the coining .spring meetings. Kennaquliair is another galloper got by Kenilworth, whilst the. speedy but bad-behaved Auckland mare, Housewife, is also by .the same sire. Two other stallions were also offered, En Garde' (St, Simon-Engagement) and King Kenilworth (Kenilworth-!.:: Fleehe), but neither of the prices obtained for tho duo were cabled across. The total amount realised by the sale of the Merton establishment—l4,B3s guineas —is far below the amount the Segenhoe and Shipley Stmts brought., their totals being 38,217 guineas and 31,245 guineas respectively. Large as these last two totals are. they are below the record amount realised «t the dispersal sale of the late Mr. G. G. Stead's racing stock and sires in 1900. when the amount received was 41,815 guineas. The following list or sires sold in Aus. tvalasia is of interest, (the words inside the parentheses- indicate how they we're disposed, of):— Gn s.
