NEW ZEALAND SOCIETY OF ACCOUNTANTS

Sir,—ln.-your issue of September 17 appeared a paragraph in refemee ta a statement made .by Mr. T. Forsyth at a meeting of tlio council of .tue> Wellington Chamber of 'Commerce, which. I quote precisely as reported: "The council of tho New Zealand Society of Accountants have never done anything to t justify their existence. Mr. Forsytli was admitted as a member' of , the New Zealand Society of Accountants in 1909, and is still a member of that body. It so happens that at the present time he is the chairman of the Wellington Education Board.. The statement attributed to Mr. !Fo>syth was made in his capacity as a member of tho council of tho Wellington' Central Chamber of Commerce, and. I desire to ask Mr. Forsytli whether,, as a member of the Society of. Accountants of nine years' standing, and chairman of the Wellington Education Board, he considers he is justified in making to a meeting of business men such a damaging • public statement about a society which he knows full well has carried out most invaluable work in the direction of tho higher commercial education-of tho young men and women of this Dominion. I feel assured that responsible educationists and the commercial community generally recognise and appreciate the work of'the society during the past nine years, but. I have no intention of allowing, snob an unjustifiable statement to go" unchallenged. A good deal more light could be thrown on'this matter, but in the meantime I would merely refer to another statement made by Mr. Forsyth at the annual meeting , of the New Zealand Society of Accountants in August, 1916. When speaking to the motion of tho president for the adoption of the annual report, ho said: "Mr.-President, I again congratulate you on your able address, and desire 'to express my appreciation of the good work done by you and tho members of the council during the past vear."—l am, etc., ERNEST W. HUNT. Wellington. September 18.
