RETREAT OF THE BULGARS
The war news to-day is full of interesting features, . the most Arilling and picturesque being those relating to General Allenby's smashing victory in Palestine. The latest report (from Mr. W. T. Massey) puts the total number of prisoners so far counted at 18,000, and "thousands more have been taken." Mr. Massey adds: "The Turkish army in Palestine ia smashed." The whole of the operations have been brilliantly oonceived, planned, and executed, and the rapidity of the advance, with its lightning flank moves, has cut off the Turks everywhere from their communications and lines of retreat. Allenby has captured Nazereth, Nablus, Samaria, Beisan, and Jenin. In Europe the chietf theatre of interest is Macedonia, where the grand offensive opened a few days ago is. steadily developing. On the British and Froncb sectors stubborn resistance and fierce counter-attacks have been the order. On the Serbian sector tie advance has gathered sufficient momentum to keep the Bulgars on the move, and the enemy is now retreating to the Vardar, 25 miles distant..' There have been' no developments of major importance in the West, although the advance is still being steadily pressed. The British have recaptured Moeuvres. A panic has seized the civilian population of Met/,, a i:d already all the well-to-do people have left the city, as also have the banks, with their money and books. ,•' ■ .
