Another big shipping merger is being discussed in Sydney, says the. correspondent of an exchange—tlio lines mentioned being tho P. and 0., ltoyal Mall Packet, Ounard, and the International Marine Company of New Jersey. It is suggested that tho P. «nd O. and Ounard, either jointly or with tho Royal Mail Puoket Company, will tnlio over the British interests in the International. There bcchig to be a growins inclination on the part of British shipowners to combine, as witness the recent important arrangement between the P. and O. ami the Union Company. It is interesting to note that within the last two years tho P. and O. has acquired the following lines of steamers:—British India, 149 Bteamors; New Zealand S.S. Co., 15 steamerSj Union SS Co., 7B steamers; llain Line, 25 steamers*; Federal Line, 13 steamers; Nourao, 6 steamers. The number of vessels thus controlled by the P. and 0. is about 286. The great Ounard Line has also been getting control of other companies, and recently acquired the Commonwealth and Dominion Line, which brings its trading activities into Australasian waters.' Tho number of vessels now In tho Ounard combination oxoeods 50, Including Borne of tho biggest lines afloat. Tho Royal Mall I'aokot Line i
controls 60 ships, so thai a I'. ami 0.-Uunant-Hoyai until combine would liavp control oi just on 10(1 Bioamurs. if tho British, section of the International Marine company conies m, it will a"tt to tni6 combine the uceanic Line HI steamoiß), Atlantic- Transport (15 steamers); and the British and North Atlantic Company i< steamers), and probably others. It is estimated that the total capital of such a combine would be between ii 0.000.000 and i'JIWOtf.MO. There are objections, oj course (says the correspondent.) to great combines of this kind-hilt it would at least oDer a very solid and powerfuliront to the problem of international shipping competition alter the war.
