YOUNG WOMAN'S LAPSE. ' Mr. I'Y V. Frazer, S.M., conducted the proceedings at tho , Magistrate's Court yesterday. I • A young woman, .named Kathleen Ward, was charged with having stolen on Tuesday afternoon last, a quantity of ladies' clothing, valued at £13 lu's., the property of- Gertrude Nind. lt ; appeared that accused had been working for Mrs. Nind at a shop in Cour-, tenay Place, and took the articles, on tlie spur of the moment. Acting-Sub-Inspector Emerson said tho girl had no parents and no", friends; but bore a good character as far as was known. She came to AVellington from Dunedin about a month ago, and a fortnight afterwards went'into the employ oi Mrs. Nind. She decided to leave suddenly, and in doing so took the articles mentioned in the - information, but could offer no explanation as to why s'ho did so. • Accused was ordered to come up for sentence when called upon 1 , on condition that she remained in -the care of tlie Salvation Army authorities until a situation could he found for her. A young man named Simon M'Kechnie, formerly employed in the Pubis Works Department, pleaded guilty to stealing a fountain-pen, valued at 17s. Gd., belonging to ; the New Zealand Government, and was admitted to probation for two years, on condition that ho took out a prohibition order against himself,'and neither accepted nor left employment without the permission of the probation officer. John M'Gregor pleaded guilty tea charge of drunkenness, but not guilty to an accusation of refusing to quit the New Zealander Hotel when requested to do so. Evidence was given that ho was told by the barman to leave tho hotel. On tho chargo of drunkenness accused was convicted and discharged, but on the other charge he was lined £1, in default 72 hours' im-. prisonment. Walter' Miles was fined 10s., with is. costs, for driving a horse and cart along tho Hutt Road without a light. "We have had a number of complaints of people driving without lights on the Hutt Road, and a mounted constable patrols there every night to put a stop to the practice," said Acting-Sub-Inspector Emerson. . Louis Gestro, for whom Mr. H. F. O'Leary appeared, pleaded guilty to boarding a train without a ticket, and was lined £2, with costs 17s. 6d., and was ordered to pay Is. Gd., the amount of the fare between Paekakariki and Plimmerton. D. P. Matthews was fined £5, will £1 8s; costs, for allowing stock to wander on the Jubilee Road, in the Onslow Borough. For failing to attend drill Edwin .Albert Mason and Walter Mulliolland wero each fined £2, and Leon Robert F. Rowe, Leslie Earl Bayliss. and Percy Reginald Sutherland were each fined £1.
The Early Settlers' and Historical Association aro having a decided change iii address at their next meeting, to be held on Monday. On tins occasion Colonel Hughes, D.S.d., is to address members and their friends, and tell.them what the children and grandchildren of tho pioneers did.on the Gallipoli Peninsula. Tho meeting is to be lield at Godber's Rooms, Courtcnay Place. /
"The Life Story of the Soul" is tho subject of a lecture to be delivered by Mr. J. It, Thomson, general secretary, Theosopliictil Society, in the Theosophical Hall, Marion Street, to-morrow evening at ? o'clock. '
