HELPING THE ITALIAN RED CROSS The Italian Market; organised by a number of citizens anxious to show their admiration of the gallantry of iho Italian' soldiers, and nt the same time- to do something to assist the ltulinn Red Cross,.was opened in the Town Hall yesterday morning by Her Excellency the- Countess of Liverpool. Tim Mayor, Mr, J. P. Luke, C.M.G., M.P., in tho course- of a brief speech; •welcomed the Countess of Liverpool, arid said that they were all {grateful to Hor Excolloncy Ifor identifying liersolf with the object of the market. On behalf of the citizens of Wellington lie expressed sincere admiration for the great..part the Italian nation had played, and wa-s playing, in tho war. There- had been a time when the decision of Italy was uncertain, but when slip cast in' her lot with the Entente there hed boen no failure, on her part to do all that was possible to bring about a final and conclusive victory. Referring to the fair, Mr. Luke said that it had meant a great amount of work on the part of tboso interested, mid they should fed very well satisfied at the measure of support with wbicii their effort bad already boon attonded. Ho hoped the generosity of the- public would bo commensurate with the worthiness of the cause, and that tho kindred Red Grogs would benefit considerably. Mr. "L. 0. H. Tripp, tho Consular Agent, must be feeling very appreciative oi the help that had been given by so many willing workers. Mr. Luke then asked the Countess of Liverpool to open the fair. In performing that ceremony Her Excellency expressed the plcasiir.e she felt at any opportunity of helping the lied Cross, and especially was she pleased 'to associate herself with the people of Wellington in their efforts to assist the Italian Red Cross. Those who were present in tho Town Hall on Monday, evening, and heard , Mr. Wilford's lecture, would have- realised better the gieat part that Italy had taken, and ia taking, in the war. Her need of iielp must be proportionately great. "Ladies and ■ gentlemen," concluded Her Excellency, "1 do feel that this': is an occasion when wo must all do our best to ensure a good result for the effort of the people of Wellington to help the Red Cross Fund of Italy. I have much pleasure in declaring this fair open, and I wish it all success. Mr. Tripp called i'or three cheers for Her Excellency, which were cordially given, and the ceremony having boen formally completed, a tour of the stalls was then'made by the Countess of Liverpool. The big 'chamber in which the market was. held had beor. very effectively arranged for that purpose, the Italian colours, which lend themselves so well for decorative purposes, being everywhere- in evidence. An Italian stall occupied the place of honour in the centre of the hall, where goods, including trinkets, artificial flowers, and fruits, buttons, nnd medallions, and all kinds of novelties were sold. The ilowev stall, covered with.a trellis-work decorated with trains of foliage and fiW: ers, occupied the space,'in front of the stage, and with its niasses of spring flowers (in which wero included some beautiful bulbs , , which had been exhibited at the Otaki Show, made a vivid display of colour at that end of the hall. At the produce stall everything, from tooth-paste to coal, appeared to bo on sale. An active part in. tho
market' was played' by Kilbirnie residents,' who had undertaken at least three- or four stalls. Various organisations had also undertaken, stalls, and all wero well stocked with a most at-' tractive display of goods of all kinds. The stalls were attended by tho following:—Sweets: Miss. Northcote (in. charge, representing 'Wellington Harbour Board), and assistants. Jumble' Stall: Women's National. Reserve, with' Mrs. Bethuno, Mrs. Hope Lewis, Mrs. Mackenzie, and Mrs. Mntthow Holmes. Livorpool Fund Stall:

Spinsters' Club: Coffee and hot pies, balloons, etc. Flowers: Mrs. Cox in charge. Hoop la: Mr. F. Hulsb in charge. Art Gallery: Mrs. C. H. Pulsford. • Bookstall :. Mesdaiiics Clark and Marshall. , A source of great attraction in fche <iftoruoon -was the baby show, for wliicb there were a great 'many entrauts. Dr. Platts-Mills was the judge, and ihe names of the prize-winners' mothers aru as follow;— For girls under six months, Mrs. Leel, Abel Smith Street, I; Mrs. Cockbum (Taranaki Street), Mrs. Smith (Wellington Road). Mrs. Dornbush (Jackson Street, Island Bay), highly commended. Girls' under 12
months:. Mrs. O'Callaghan, Karori Road, 1; Mrs. Hunt (Penrose Avenue), Mrs. Tonkin (Bcrhampore), Mrs. Saunders (Tarnnaki- Street), Mrs. Colclough (Moxham Avenue, Kilbirnie), highly commended.' Boys under twelve months: Mrs. Farey, Macduff 'Terrace, Newtown, 1. Twins under twelve months: Mrs. W. M.'Loan, Lawrence Street, I.' Captain Hale-Mnnrn and Mr. Munt assisted in tho organising of'.the baby show, in which a great amount o>i interest appeared to bo taken by the onlookers m the hall'. Judging by yesterday's exhibition the physique, of'thc young New Zenlandw at the beginning of his career appeared to be all .that could be desired.-To-day will be a street day in aid of the same cause, that of the Italian Itel Cross. ; The success of the homo treatment for tho hair is manifested by tho numerous letters aiid testimonials received by Mrs. Kolleston.
