AN OLD NATIVE FEUD
MENTIONED AT'THE TRIAL OF A MAOEI. W TcleEraph-Presß Association. . Cisborno, September 17. An iiiterpsting circumstance at tho trial of Love Tuko to Itangi Hurae, remanded from Napier for trial by a Maori jury at Gisoorno for an offence against a* Nativo girl undor sixteen, was accused's explanation why ho ran away to Whakatauo, wbero he was arrested by order of the Court. Accused said that on arrival at Gisbomo he found that tho Maori peopleherd wero up against him, because of a Nativo feud of tho early days between tho local tribe and tho Uriweras, to whom he belonged. On account or accused's absence the Maori jury was dismissed, and the Court ordered that accused be tried before a European jury, who found.him guilty, but recommended that he be leniently treated. ■ The prisoner was sentenced-to two and a half years' imp)isonment. Mr. Justice Hosking said there was no real' ground for the suggestion that thp local Maoris would not have done thoir duty as jurors impartially.
