MEETING. OF THE COTJNOIL. the Petono Borough Coiincil; was iiold , last evening, -there were proacW'the Mayor (Mr. J. tv. M'Ewan), 'Councillors C. P. Brocklebank.'J. Churchbuse, S. Norlands, J. '..M'Dougall, R.H/Jones, and E.Tovey. ' Thfe Lower -' liutt -Borough Council, which;, purchases 'gas from the Petone Borough Council,., wrote, stating that diirilig 'the past'f®w .weeks the quantity oFms supplied had been insufficient for the Hutt "Borough. requirements, and •thdt'i gas agreement between ' : the two councils had been com--taitted. In-: '.order that a sufficient supply of gas might, be obtained it would be necessary that the pressure bo increased.-" v; • ' . '. • The Petone Council pointed out that the pressure'set oiit' in the agreement .was being supplied:. . . It was suggested by Councillor Chiirchouse that'a reply-bo sent to the Hutt Borough Council that tho agreement was being observed, and .that tlie Hutt ratepayers be advised to hold an indignation/meeting,- and call upon their council to confer with Petone, in order that a'fair and amicable agreoment might be reached. Councillor .Tovey said ho was assured that -raanv of the ratepayers of Butt, wero in 'favour of paying- moro for their' gas, but that only a few wero blocking an agreement being secured. It- was decided to adhero. t6 tjie 'agreement'in regard''to pressure, land, to agree to a conference with the Hutt A letter was received . from Mr. Joseph Astill, pointing out that iii view of the unsatisfactory state of affaii'B arid-all the attendant evils now existing between, the Petone and Hutt Borough Councils, and the great possibilities for the benefit of the public by, tho amalgamation of the two boroughs, the ouestion be given earnest consideration. Tho Mayor was of opinion that no harm would result from a conference such as suggested. The' time would come, sooner or later, when amalgamation would.be brought abput. . As the population increased the question could not. be hold backhand t]ie ratepayers would demand -that the -boroughs be made one. • Councillor M'Dougall said tho day was approachjug when Petone and Hutt would be amalgamated, and the" sooner the question was discussed the sooner it would be brought about. A resolution was passed agreeing to the holding of a conference provided the writer of the letter could make arrangements with the Hu'tii Borough Comxil ifor tlie conference, It was' decided to grant the uso of the recreation ground on September 21 for a football match between representatives of tho city and Hutt ' Valley schools. : ■Tho Ivorokoro School applied for cricket pitches on the recreation ground for Tuesdays and Thursdays, and the Petone Cricket Club applied jfor tho uso of tlie pitches awl practice wickets for the season. It was deeidol to refer the applications to the Reserves Committee.
