ALLEGED THEFTS OF FOOD. Two charges of tho. theffc of fuod ■were, called. Josey Williams, a younp; woman, was accused of the theft of 21b. of butter and a loaf of/bread, and also a -quantity of cutlery, valued at £2, ' from .Adam John Monro, fiho was treinand•ed to September 24. • The other case was that of Robert ■'Gould, who was brought before the Court charged with the theft of 2s. worth of olives, pickles, and preserves belonging to tho Union Steam Ship Company. • Both defendants were admitted to. fcafil. ' . ' SENT TO WORK.' Charlos M'Geahan, who was charged -with insobriety sand . breach' of a 'prohibition order, was said to have caused considerable annoyance at a hostel where he stayed. •' •. t , ■ . Defendant said .that,he had. sorved at the "front for over threo years, and he promised to go .out of town to work tand to stay away from Wellington for ;a year. •" : •'■ • ' '-• The Court gave him till the afternoon •train to get out of town, and told him that if he came back within a year he would be sent to the "island."- ■ JACK TAR AND TRAM ' CONDUCTOR. ■ John Dir.woodio M'Nearnie, an exNavy man, was charged with creating trouble on n tram'car.: It was said that, while inebriated Le refused -.to ■leave the platform of the car, used obscene language, and assaulted the •conductor. As the polioe put it: "When the conductor attempted to put liim off tho car he launched a violent coun-' ter-offensive and smote the, eonduotor in the eye." , Defendant was prohibited, fined £2, and ordered to pay 10s. costs. ALLEGED FAILTCtE --TO ACCOUNT FOE MONEY. Lewis EAward Nicholas was brought fonvard g.nd accused of fraudulently failin" to account' for Ul 9s. 3d. receivef fay.Garrett and Co., butchers. •.The pjolice' said that tliey proposed' bringing other charges against the defendant.
