A Colden Wedding, Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Lovelock celebrated their golden wedding by a family gathering nt their home, Newbury, Rangitikoi Line, Palmergton North, yesterday, at which all the members of their family (with the exception of'one son who is at the front) were present. They received numerous congratulations and good wishes ifor their, health an'd happiness from far and near. Mr. and Mrs. Lovelock were married in the Wesleyan Church, Manners Street, Wellington, on September 16, 1868, by the Rev. W. Kirlc, and received a present of a Bible from tho trustees, they being the first couple to be married in the new building. There is a family of thirteen—nine sons and four daughters—who are all' living, and thero are twenty-three grandchildren. Ono son is at the front, and three sons and a son-in-law ate in camp, the youngest son expecting to' leave with the next contingent. Mr. Lovelock was, born in Wellington, his parents having arrived by the ship Bolton in 1840. Mrs, Lovelock is the eldest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edwin. Bannister, and was also born in Wellington._ Mr. and Mrs, Lovelock have been living at their present home. Palmerston. North, for a number of years, highly respected by all who know them ifor their hospitality and kindly nature. . ,
A quiet wedding took place on September 4. at the Unitarian Church, Vivian Street, Wellington. The parties were Corporal J. P. Madden, eld,est son of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Madden, Christchuroh, and Miss Mary Oliver, younjr.est daughter uf Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Oliver, Fentherston (formerly of Auckland). Tlio Rev. G. E. Hals, 8.A., was the officiating minister. The bride, who was given away by her father, was attended by her sistor, Mica Eileen Oliver, and Miss Hilda Hoaro. The bridegroom was attended by Sergeant-Maior Taylor. The church was tastefully decorated with yellow daffodils and freesias and blue and pink hyacinths. The Bridal March from "Lohengrin," and Mendelssohn's Wedding March were played by Master Jaok Beaglehole, who presided at the organ. . After partaking of refreshments at the residence of the Rev. G. E. Hale, 8.A., Ghuznee Streot, < Mr. and Mrs. Madden left for a short honeymoon to be spent in the south. The engagement is announced of Miss Moore, of Martinhorough, ..to Mr. \V. H. Nicnollq, of Martinborough. Mrs. P. Frcoth (Palmerston North) is spending a week in Wellington and is staying at tho Hotel Cecil. A danco in aid of tho Italian Red Cross was held ,in St. Anne's Hall, Newtown, last evening. ' A meeting of tho AYellington Red Cross Shop Committee was held at tho Town Hall yesterday afternoon, the Mayoress (Mrs. J. P. Luke) presiding. It was reported that matters were nroaressins: vory satisfactorily in connection with tho shop, and good returns wore still boinc: received., A sum of £1000 is to bo handed over; to the treasuror of tho Wellington Branch of the New' Zealand Red Cross for tho benefit of Now Zealand sick and wounded soldiers. Seven hundred and fifty pounds of tho'-amount was taken on the Thorndon Day-at tho Red' Cross Shop last week. A very interesting exhibit is to bo seen in ihe'Singer Company's window, showing tho possibilities of spinning and dyeing wool in the Dominion. One of the Navy League's spinning wheel® is shown, surrounded by spun wool in natural colour, also in orange, brown, tan, green, etc., which are the result of dyes inado from the varieties of coprosma and other New Zealand shrubs and trees. The dyeing and many useful articles, for sailors in the form of socks, mittens, etcare the work of Mrs. Lover, of Wellington, and Mrs. Harris, of Dunediu. A "Shetland" shawl and a mat of home production are shown also, and are to be raffled. The exhibit altogether is quite a surprise to most people, and should encourage the good old art of spinning. In the List shipment of Red Cross goods sent from the Mercer Street depot, IBcwt. of cake was included, of which 12cwt. was packed for the hospitals in England and 6cwt. for Egypt. The committee is vefy greatly indebted to the boys of the Technical College and the engineering instructor for the assistance they gave in providing fcms in which to pack tho cake—the City Corporation giving empty benzine tins and Mr. M'Kay providing the tools with which'the boys cut the tins to the required size. TJpon completion the tins wore taken to the power-house and there thoroughly cleaned, so that there should be 110 trace of benzine left. This work was done by the boys at the beginning of their holidays, and Mrs. Luke and her oommittee greatly appreciate their action at such a time as that. Morison, £2 'is.; Ohakune Junction, £2; Bulls Red Cross girls, £1; Spinsters' Club, £0. , During the past three months 10,0001b. of cake lias been dispatched overseas for Now Zealand soldiers from; Wellington. Jn a consignment of soldiers' parcels which had been received from Waipukurau was packed ■ aOOOib. of cako alone, and as there were 800 parcels it,will bo seen that each man who receives one of this lot will got a goodly share of cake. The packing, too, was admirably carried out.
