THE ENTRY INTO ST. HIHIEL A TOUCHING WELCOME Paris, September 15. When Mr. N. D. Baker, American. Secretary for AVar, General Pershing, and General Pctum entered St. MihieL the Mayor and the remaining citizens welcomed, theni with touching enthusiasm. They reported that the town iiad been subjected to forced levies amounting to a million francs, and that a largo number of men and boys had been deported to Germany. Prior to their fligijt the Germans stripped the countryside bare by systematic pillage and destruction, even stealing the entire contents of the peasants' cottages, including the bedclothes. —Aus.-N.Z.
