CHARITY CUP FINAL Y.M.C.A. V. PORIRUA At Association Park, South Kilbirnio, Y.M.C.A. and Porirua- met in the final for the Charity Cup on Saturday ifteruoon in the presence of a goodly number of people. The game was played in a virile spirit quite in keeping with the traditions of Association football, and -was enjoyed by spectators and players alike. • Y.M.C.A. kicked off with the wind aiicl the sun at their backs—a big factor—for the wind was _ considerable — and quickly invaded Porirua's territory. Porirua relieved the pressure, and took play to midfield. Here Y.M.C.A. gained Thomas making a nice opening for Webster, who transferred to Elford, the latter's kick resulting in a corner, which Porirua cleared. Neat footwork by Porirua's vanguard, in which Mairs and Daly were prominent, terminated in tho (former testing Sinclair _ (Y.M.C.A.'s goalkeeper), who received and kicked, well to touch. Friberg enhanced Y.M.C.A.'s position by sending on nicely to Ballard, then "to Baker, ttf Knowles-Smith, who shot wide. Back came Y.M.C.A. with a nippy rush, Ballard receiving a nice pass from Elford, and from close quarter's sent in a hot shot, which Wi Neera' (Porirua's goalkeeper) saved magnificently. Tlay returned to midfield, and Tyer headed a-Porirua rush, making considerable headway, but when, dangerous was well beaten for the ball by Friberg, who kicked well down field. Back came Porirua, and Daly, and then MuiTgavin both had shots; .but Sinclair was alert. Play now voered towards the centre, where a lot of line-play was indulged iri. Eventually Coad' (Y.M.C.A.) secured, and sent on to Knowles-Smith, who cross-kicked to Elford, who sent in a hot drive, but Wi Neera, saved, and kicked well up the field. A clever, combined rush by Y.M.C.A.'s forwards was the next outstanding feature. Receiving the hall from Thomas, AYebster made off down the line, passing at the. right moment to Elford, then to Ballard, to Baker, who netted the ball, out, unfortunately ifor his side, he had got offside, and Porirua found relief with the resultant free kick. Y.M.C.A. were now getting decidedly the better of the play, but sterling work on the part of Cross and Wallace kept them at hay. At length Porirua broke away,'and treated the spectators to a nice piece of combined'play. Receiving from AVliitehouse, Mungavin set sail down the left wing, passing to Sorbie. then.to Tyrer, to Daly, tho latter making a good attempt to score. From the kick-out Y.M.C.A. took the , ball right down to Porirua's citadel, where Ballard made si very line attempt, from which Cross, in attempting to save"; Marly headed through, but Wi Neera rushed to the rescue, and brought off a particularly meritorious, save. Shortly afterwards the whistle sounded for half-time with neither side having scored.; On resuming, Porirua, with the wind at their backs, quickly took up tho offensive, and iii quick succession Mungavin and Mairs had shots, but their efforts were resultless. Y.M.C.A. re-' moved play to' midfield, but Holder (Porirua) set his vanguard going with a nice kick to Mairs, who sent on to Daly, back to Mairs, but at this juncture Poriruaw'ere awarded a penalty - kick for an infringement on the part of Friberg. Porirua entrusted the kick to Cross (excitement running high meanwhile), but (Sinclair rose to the occasion, aiid brought off a magnificent .save. Y.M.C.A. cleared, and their forwards took the ball right down to Porirua's citadel, "Wi Neora being called upon to savo two shots in rapid succession. A'free kick to Porirua gave Tyrer an opportunity, but his shot was' wide. Back camo Porirua, and Daly drove hard, but Sinclair saved. Play was now racing up and down field, and the spectators were not slow in showing their appreciation of the faro provided, their applause being very hearty. Y.M.C.A., it was plainly noticed, wero now getting the upper hand, and their forward rushes wero taking a lot of stopping. At length their efforts were rewarded. Stephenson (Y.M.C.A.'s centre-half) secured, and sent to Ballard: who tipped it on to Baker, then to Knowles-Smith, and the speedy leftwinger finished up a neat movement by beating Wi Neera with a very simple shot. Y.M.C.A., 1; Porirua,'nil. In the concluding stages, Elford almost ..scored, his shot just missing by the narrowest of margins. Shortly 'afterwards the whittle sounded for no-side, Y.M.C.A. running out winners by one goal to nil. Mr. C. Webster controlled the game.

Marist, I; Institute, nil. Right from the kick-off from the circle Marist's forwards took the ball right down to|lnstitute's goal-mouth, where M'Elligdtt almost had the ball through, but M'Arthur came from tho clouds, and virtually took tho ball from his feet, and kicked well up field, .nortly afterwards the whistle sounded for half-time, with Marist leading by one goal to nil. . Here Institute's forwards mado several efforts, no fewer than two corners being awarded them, but without result. iMnrist's fullbacks (Fitzgerald and O'C'onnell) at mis stage were putting up a great defence, and repeatedly earned tho plaudits of the spectators in recognition of their efforts.
