WELLINGTON CENTRAL BY-ELECTION

NO LACK OF CANDIDATES DATE FOR POLLING Thero is no lack of candidates for the vacancy of 'Wellington Central. Three candidates are sure to go to the poll—the Government nominee (Mr. AV. T. Hildreth), the official Labour candidate (who has still to he selected), and Mr. J. >E. Fitzgerald, who states that he will certainly go 'to the poll, standing as an Independent. The names of at least three jtlier prospective candidates have been mentioned. Mr. Harry Atmoro is one of these. The information about him is meagre, but it is probable that he intends to go on with the fight. His name was freely mentioned as the-likely Government candidate, but it is undsrstood that he was never in the running actually for the Government nomination. Mr. M. J. Mack is being asked to stand, and it is not improbable that he will do so. He has promised to state his intentions very early, this week. If ho does not say ".Yes," it is possible that the Prohibition party will put up a man. Tho other possible candidate is Mr. 'Lon M'Kenzie, who also has promised to make his intentions known very soon. _ It 'would seem to be very improbable that so many .candidates will see '. i-o fight out to the end, but the chances are that there will be at least four names on the ballot paper on polling The date of the election has not yet been fixed. The first step that must ho taken is the notification in the Gazette of the vacancy. Then it is tho duty of the Clerk of Writs to issue the writ. 'The writ will probably he issued not later than Friday next, and the ran will be closed as from that day. It will therefore he wise for voters to see that they are enrolled as soon as possible. The writ mav be issued before Friday. The writ must bo returnable within twenty-eight days, which means that the polling must take place within twenty-one" days of the-issue of tho writ. On this reckoning poH in g will be during the week October 7 to I*.
