Tho salient has been completely flattened out. Tho Ameri- : oano caught tho enemy at a thno when ho was preparing to ovacu-, ' ate the salient, but his preparations were far from complete. Proof cf the demoralising effect of the blow is seen in the capture of 13,300 • Gorman prisoners,'and also in the undamaged state of the town of St. Mihiel and the railways abandoned'by the enemy in his retreat. The British are keeping up'a strong pressure, of attack on. tho. approaches to Cambrai, and'have heavily repulsed a series of counterattacks. They have made some progress also farther -north, notably in capturing the village of Auchy, which stands one inilo south-west of La Basses. French and British troops in conjunction are clos- * ing in on St. Quentin, and the French are reported to be pushing forward between the Ailctte'and the Aisne, on tho western flank of the Ohemin des Dames ridge. According to a London message, the 'whole of the trans-Siberian'railway, from Vladivostok to Samara, is now controlled by tho Allies and Czecho-Slovaks. Tho latest official cablegrams received in London, it is stated/confirm tho impression that the Bolshevik' Government is breaking up. It is reported that General Brusiloff, who victoriously led tho Russian armies in the great Southern offensive and afterwards became Commander-in-Chief, was shot at Moscow, outside the Tugan Prison. It is understood, a Rome message states, that Italy has taken the initiative in • recognising the Southern Slav movement—that is, to say, in recognising the claim of the Southern Slavs to separate and independent nationality;
