'' The tug Pelican, owned by the LeylandO'Brien Timber Company, of Auckland, has heen sold to Mr. E. G. F. Zohrab, of Wellington, to replace tho Admiral, which was recently bought by Mr. E. C. Perano, of Picton, for the Sounds trade. The Peli- ■ can was built at Paisley, Scotland, in 1900, and was sent to Australia, being putchasod by tho Devonport Steam Ferry Company from a Brisbane firm about 14 years ago. She went to Auokland under her own steam with tho Ferret, another tugboat purchased by the Forry Company, in tow, occupying only eight days on tho run. When the Leylnnd-O'Brien Timber Company put the Stella out of commission about five years ago-tho Pelican was purohased to replace her. and has since been engaged bringing rafts of timber from the coast.' She has just been overhauled and painted, and left Auokland yesterday morning direct for Wellington. It is expected that she will arrive either to-mor-row nieht or Saturday morning. The Pelican is a steel twin-screw tug ol 162 tons gross, 100 ft. long, 21ft. broad, and Bft. 4in. deep. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. A. Q. Baggart, formerly chief officer of tho Kaitoa, has joined the Kennedy aa master in placo of Captnin Henry, who is on sick leave. Mr; John Reeves lias signed oil tho Kaitoa as scoond officer. Mr. J. E. Walker, second male of the Corinna, having signed, oil the vessel's articles at Dunedin, his place has been taken by Mr. T. Bayne, formorly mate of the lima. Mr. P. J. Hiokey has Bigncd on with the Maori as chlcf engineer in placo of Mr. S. M'Dowall. Mr. J. Power, third engineer on tho Pu tiki, haß oomc ashore, his successor being Mr. W. H. Houghton. The 'Frisco steamer Moana is to Bail at 7 a.m. to-day. Tho Whnngarei Harbour Board has appointed Mr. Blair Mason, C.E., of Dunedin,' to report upon improvement to Wliangarci Harbour in mped to the provision of facilities'for oversea shipping; also on tlie locaton of the Town Wharf in relation to railway eommnnication, and with a view to carrying out reclamation workß. An expected arrival at, Wellington today is tlie Westralia from Melbourne direct, berthing lit No, 6 Queen's Wharf. She iij to sail again on Saturday afternoon for Melbourne; via Lyttelton, Dunedin, and Blufl. Tho Corinna Is now on her way from Lyttelton to New Plymouth, via Nelson. To-morrow morning she la duo at New Plymonth to load produce for Wellington. From this port she will prooeed to toutnern ports.

Tho inadequate steamer service between New Zealand and tlie eastern coasts of Canada and the United States is now supplemented by means of the fleet of sailing vessels which ntc plying to Sydney anil Melbourne for the purpose of carrying to America tho Australian wheat,. Against the loss of timo involved in the slower passage and the need for transhipment, the importers of the Dominion aro able to set a reduction in tlie aggregate oost of freight by about 50 per cent., aB compared with tho steamship tariff, f Cargo for Nauier will bo received till noon to-day by the Rosamond. The Mana is to sail to-night for Lyttelton. The Calm is to load at Wellington today for Wangauui. l'ho Stella is expectcd to arrive here tomorrow from Dunedin. On Monday she will sail for Auokland with general enrgo. The Rivernia will leave for Sydney at daylight on Saturday morning. Tho Wootton is to load here this morning for Lyttelton. The schooner Bertio Minor is now taking in ballast, and is to sail about Saturday for Vavau (Tonga) to load copra for 'Frisco. With carjo from Dunedin the Union Company's Koromiko in expected to arrive in port this morning. On her trip 6onth from Auokland tho Monowai will call at Wellington on Thursday next to load for Lyttelton and Dunedin. As the Mapourika will on Wednesday next go on the slip for cleaning and painting there will be no" steamer for Picton on that day. The Kaliu will Vday probably sail for •Napier. Tho Anchor Company's Rcgulus iB to load here on Moudny for Nelson and Weßt Coast. ' 'Che Huia is to dear Shelly Bay to-mor-row with explosives for tho West Coast mines. - Owing to the action of the Australian Government, the shipping companies in Colombo will not give through bills of lading to New Zealand. In the meantime New Zealand importers have to appoint shipping agents in Australia to look after their interests. Colombo merchants are now urging the Commonwealth Government to withdraw its restrictions regarding the bills of lading. Tho Australian-owned steamer Bellambi has been successfully floated oil tho reef at Noumea, where she was stranded on October 10 laßt year. Tho barque Rothesay Bay, bound from San Franoisco to Timaru, was sighted off Napier ,on August 25. - The eyesight test for candidates who desire positions on vessels toing to sea has .always been a sourco of troublo to tho ■Department of Navigation. So acute has thiß troublo become that the Admiralty recontly found it necessary to issue instructions with reference to the eye test. Every British ship leaving a United Kingdom port bound to a danger zono must now possess at least four seamen having passed the test. • The "Argus" (Melbourne),, reporting tlie fact that for fourteen dayß two sailing vessels, fully laden,, bod been lying at .anchor, owing to a sufficient number, of. seamen not being obtainable, it stated that among the seamen available thero is a strong disinclination to sign on tho articles of a sailing craft if a position on a steamer is offering. . . . The British mercantile marine is at present fory much below strength. Largo numbers of seamen havo enlisted for servico at the front, insta/nccs being known of whole crews of sailing ships and steamers having signed off at Melbourne in order to join tho colours. This depletion has been so great that for some , months owners or charterers of sailing vessels havo been compelled to, rely almost exclusively on foreigners in the manning of their ships. Now the supply of soamen of neutral nations. qb far as Australian ports aro concerned, is on tho point of exhaustion, and this fact Is responsible for tho .present detentions. •"
