SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION IN THE TOWN HALL. Id is an ingenious mind tliat is aule to contrive uew ellects ju tho decoration of the Town jlj.ail at tins tune ot its nistory, and the fact that this was done lor last night's ball meant quite an achievement on the part of the decorators. Narrowcoloured rinbon had been carried lrom a ltoop fastened in tlio middle of the hall just below ' the central electrolier to the sides of the gallery, and a huge cluster of balloons of all imaginable colours suspended from it, looking like a cluster of uncommon and most attractive grapes. Bunches of these balloons were also suspended fronl the gallery, which was festooned with yellow and blue drapery, );ept in place by smaller clusters of the balloons. The epac6 underneath had been turned into alcoves, and each distinguished by the name of an ally. Furnished with chairs and couches, they made comfortable resting-places, adding, as well to the 'dewitativt? effect of the chamber with their red, white, and blue drapery and clusters of palms and foliage plants. A pretty black and white trellis work, enclosing a water scene, separated the organ loft from the stage, which was' bunked with palms, foliage, plants, and flowers, while above was the badge of the .Returned Soldierb'' Association, earned out 111 white on a scarlet background. Outside the chamber the vestibule also had been transformed with llags, baiuboo clumps and palms, into a decorativo feature of the bull. The Trentliam Band supplied delightful music for dancing. Tne committee responsible for the arrangements in connection' with the ball comprised: Mesdames -J. B. M'Ewan, W. H. MontgomF. Boden; A. E. Whyte, J. D. Harper, Colonel J. 6. Hughes, C.M.G.,, D.5.0., Messrs J I'. Maxwell, M. J. Kilgour, J. D.. Harper, D. J. B. Seymour (hon. secretary), T. Bohlson (secrotary of tlio Returned Soldiers' Association), and D. A. Higgie (treasurer). The D.I.C. was responsible for the decorations bf the hall.. . / Yesterday afternoon Miss Fraaer gave a ''coin afternoon" at the Ministerial residence in ■ Tinakori Road for the benefit of the cake stall at the .Wellington Red. Cross Shop 011 Friday. A competition for a cake (which does not close till Friday), tea-cup reading, and a sale of buttonholes realised a very useful sum, and during the afternoon Mrs. F. M.. B. Fisher played some violin solos. Tea was served in the dining-room, where til® tea-tablo was arranged with primulas and violets. As a result of tlio Navy League entertainment held a short time ago in aid of the French Relief Fund, it is hoped to hand over nearly £70. Miss Coates, at a recent meeting of the leuaue, specially eulogised the work done by Miss Mary Butler in arranging the entertainment for the league, and a heartv vote of thanks .was passed to her and to the manager of the D.I.C(Mr. Simm). It is satisfactory to learn that mnny gifts are being sent in by people who are interested in the splendid hostel for soldiers and on The Terrace. ' Among tho latest lire three spinning i wheels, presented by Mrs. Lowry,' of | Hastings. These will be a .great noon to some of the invalids who are unablo to return to their former occupations, and wty> will gladly use their hands in this work, which is quite possible for them. Tlio wool spun will be offered for sale later 011.
