THE BATTLELINE TO-DAY
The abovo map illustrates tho remarkable progress made by the Allies in their' offensive. The Allied advance from the line' reached by llie (.iumans in the offensive which camo to an end in July is shown in successive stages. Of all his gains from March to July, tho enemy now retains little morn than the Fhmder.-i ridges, the heights of- tho Aisue, and a comparatively limited extent of territory south of tho Aisne. Against his retention' of these areas there is to bo set the fact that the Allies lmvo broached his strongest defences on a wide front 011 the approaches to Douai and Cnmbrai. The Lys salient has been flattened, and tho Allies have closely approached the Hindenburg lino (to which the enemy was driven last year) along tho whole front from west of Cnmbrni to tho Aisne.
