Patriotic Entertainment. Last evening a patriotic ontortainment arranged liy Mrs. 1 Percy Woods for tlio benefit of the It'ed Cross copper trail was held in tlio Concert Chainber of tho Town Hall./ The stngo had been very ' prettily . decorated, by tho D.1.0., in keeping with , tho oponing number; a Ja]>:inese' scene, "Sakura,' or "The Cherry Trees," in which tlio following took part:—Misses Kpney, Lambert, Exton, Evans, Hnsselwood, Venables, and Wattors, pupils of Mrs. Woods. Songs were contributed by Miss Hazel Fuller, Mr. W. Goudie, Miss Godier, and Mr. Eugene Ossipoff, and tlio Y.W.C.A. Lyric Club contributed part songs. 'Cello solos were played by Mr. Smalibone,] and tho Misses Huntingdon contributed a sketch, "TJid Backward Child," the Misses Waters, Lush, Hickoyj andHuntingdon giving a comedy sketch, "Protection." Tho Hccompaniments were played by Mr. Foster. A stall for the sale of sweets added to the proceeds of tlio entertainment, which was practically a. repetition of a previous one given for a patriotic object a short time ago.. Returned Soldiers' Ball. A meeting of the committee for tho returned soldiers' ball, to take place in' the Town Hall this evening, was held yesterday afternoon. All the arrangements were reported to be well in hand, and everything augurs, well for the success of the evening. Late trams will be outside the 'lown Hall at two o'clock to take people back to their homes in the suburbs, and it in anticipated that I there will be a large number of dancers and well-wishers of the association present. The proceeds from the ball are to be donated to the funds of the Wellington Returned Soldiers 1 - Club-house Society. A reception committee consisting of Colonel Hughes, C.M.G., D.5.0., Mrs. W. H. Montgomery, Mrs. MaeEwan, Mrs. Boden, Mr. Kilgour, and Mr. Maxwell was set up, .and it was further reported that tne D.I.C. had already commenced to decorate the hall ready fbr this evening. Judging from all indications the ball promises to. be an outstanding success. ' Wellington Red Cross Shop. Thorndon ladies will hold a largo sale of produce, cakes, sweets, and liowers 011 Friday next. Mrs. Masscy, who I?, organising the day, lias had many kind offers of gifts, which include eggs, butter, and bacon from the country. The help for the lied Cross is so much needed that this, opportunity to assist should not bo missed. The raffle for the linen and' chest, which haS created so much interest, will be drawn in the afternoon. Already a considerable sum of money has been raised by it, and tho organisers desire it to be known tliat only a few tickets remain, and they will be glad* to hear from those who still wish to help tho cause ,by taking a chancc in the raffle. The shop will be' open as usual on Thursday, when tho many promises of gifts will bo received, so that preparations for an early start for the sale on Friday can be made. . Dance at Soldiers' club. The usual dance is to be hold at the Sydney Street, Soldiers' Club to-night. Holders of blue tickets arc asked to bo, certain to attend, or,, if unable to at-; tend, to get into touch with the committee per telephone. Mrs. Wilson, of Dunedin, a sister of tho late Lieut.-Colonel Cecil Humphries,'M.C., D.5.0., is at present resident in Wellington.' Her liusband is in camp. ■ Miss Phyllis Bates is visiting-Christ-church, 1 / ' Tho wedding took place last week at St. Mary's Church, Parnell, Auckland, of Miss Sybil Alice Mossraan, daughter of Mr. Ji. Mossinan, "Tiritea, Reinuera, to Mr. John do Renzy Anthony, late of Pio Pio, and son of the late Dr. Anthony, England. Mr. Bert lloyle, with the probable assistance of a Williamson .ballet mistress, will dor the judging in the dancing sections in connection with tho Wellington Music, Elocutionary, and Dancing Competitions, to bo held in November. A,bazaar iu aid of the Bed Cross funds and of the Soldiers' Christmas Gift Fund is to be..held in tho Town Hall, Featherston, oni Tuesday next, from two to half-past five in the afternoon) and seven to ten in tho evening. Provision has been made for all kinds of attractions, including fortune-tell-ing, and not even the children will be neglected, as there will be bran-tubs for their special benefit. There will lie stalls for the sale of produce, cakes, sweets, flowers, and novelties of all kinds, for which many contributions have been received. It is hoped there 'will be a large attendance of the public for thei good of the cause. > The death occurred at Kihikihi, W.iikato, last week, of Mrs. Lee, who, as Miss Nellie Gage, many years ago was a favourite singer 011 the amateur concert platform in Wellington (states an exchange). -She had a sweet .oontrnlto voice, and sang with taste. 1 She was a sister of Davy Gage (the finest allround back that.New Zealand ever put in the Rugby field), and of J. Gage, formerly of tho; Government Printing Office. ' ! ' In the window of the - offices of the Dominion of New Zoaland in the Strand, London (says the "Nursing Mirror''), aniid stuffed birds _ ajid samples of produco and corn, a picture is exhibited representing Miss Edith Cavell on her way to Tier execution. It is daybreak, and the faint morning light steals across the nurse's blue and white uniform and lights up her sweet and steadfast face. Behind her come the Gorman guards, with heavy, anllon faces, as if half-ashamed of their task. The painting, whioh is Iby A. Pearce, tells it 3 story well, though the likeness is not a striking one. It is eventually to be hung in the General Hospital, Dunedin. j
