In the "Sunday Times" appears an interesting item from the Amsterdam correspondent regarding a Berlin hank manager who was summoned for having illicitly purchased two pounds of butter. The accused was described ns a veritable giant, about eiglifc feet high and weighing over seventeen stone. He was lined £3, although medical testimony was produced to prove that he could not subsist on the rations allowed. As.lie left the Court tho man remar!?ed that to .avoid death by starvation he must face perpetual prosecution. Recent yearsj said Mr. I<\ Miluer, M.A., during his address at the Town Hall iast evenjng, had seen a great reduction in the use of alcohol in all modern hospitals. The experience of the London Temperance Hospital, which was established in the 'seventies —that it had a lower rate of mortality than the majority of hospitals in spite of the fact that it did not use alcohol at all— was .proof conclusive that the value of the drug had been over-rated. And the evidence against the value of alcohol as a medicine" was accumulating all the time. It was admitted that alcoliol was one of the great predisposing causes to venereal disease. Sir Victor Horsley had declared that nine-tenths of the eases that occurred in the Army were the direct result of drink.
