CELEBRATIONS IN AMERICA

MESSAGE FROM KING GEORGE

' New York, September 7. The anniversary of the liattlo of tho Marne and tho birth of Lafayette were jointly celebrated by impressive ceremonies at which the Allied nations were represented. King George sent a message to the Franco-American Society, through Lord Stamfordliam (bis private secretary): "I am commanded 'to express to tho society and its distinguished guests tlia King's cordial thanks for tho message and greetings addressed to His Maj-* esty on the occasion ' of 'yoHr-celeßra-tion dinner."

Marshal Fooli, President Poinearo, and General Pershing sent messages to the American people. _ - President Poinearo ,said : ''At the Marne France defended the liberty of herself aw] mankind. In the name of France 1 send America a message of fidelity, affection, and admiration." < General Pershing's message stated: "On the anniversary of the 'great battle all peoplo who love liberty.and hate oppression unite in a tribute of admiration and gratitude to'the gallant soldiers of France and Britain who turned back the enemy's hordes, making possible the present glorious victory, which will save civilisation." .
