PORT NICHOLSON YACHT CLUB
ANNUAL REPORT. The committee of the Port Nicholson' Yacht Club, in. its annual report, congratulates members on the very satisfactory results obtnined during the season. Although the club was still labouring under tho difficulties eauscd by the war, the membership of the various yachts' crows had been well maintained, and owners responded very heartily to the committee's racing programme. The first-class championship flag was won by Messrs. Howie and iCo.'s Waitangi. In all six races were held to decide the first-class points ag\giegate, all the races being keenly con'tcstod, and resulted as i'ollow:—Atalanta, two firsts and three seconds; Kotiri, two firsts and two seconds; Waitangi, one first; Viola, one first; Bona, one second. In the sec.ond-class championship, Mr. G. M'Lean's lolantho was successful in carrying off the honours after a very hard-fought contest. Six races were sailed, and the detailed results were, as follow :—Venus, two i first, two seconds; AVairere I, Usi firsts, one second; lolimthe, one first-, two seconds; Rawene, one first, one second. Three general handicaps were held during the season, AA r aitangi winrang. two, and the "White Heather the other. During the season one longdistance race was held, in which the AVairere I scored an excellent win, tho Windward being second. Tho committoo was gratified at the number of entries received for the ocean raco to Port Underwood and back, which showed a considerable, improvement on previous years. The. winner was again Mi'. G. M'Lean's lobinthe. The first race for the Mills, Challenge Cup was held during the season, and resulted in Mr. W. Duncan's Viola being first, with Atalanta second, and Bona third. In order to make the classification of the boats more equitable the committed inaugurated a third class. Four races were held, .and resulted as follow Ethel, two firsts, ono second; Mini, one first and tsp seconds'; May, one first; AVaimoa, one second. . The ladies' race was again a highly-success-ful function, Miss Olive M'Lean steering the Viola to victory in splendid ttvle. The committee was able, dur- • ing the season, to put on a race •;or the veterans. Mr. D. Howard, in the A 7 iola, won the race, and in doing so showed many of the younger skippers how a yacht should be sailed. Thrly in the season the committee held u meeting at Evans Bay in order .to enrol yachting enthusiasts there. An Evans Bay sub-committee was formed, : and controlled all the centre-board boat racing for the club. The following boats were tho prize-winners for this class:—Maliana (Winder Cup), Blow Fly, Runa, Aotea, AVainui, Now. The names of K. Cole and AV. Ambroso are added to those mentioned im the last report as having "gone West" in the great war. A number of havo left for the front with various reinforcements during the season, and the committee wishes them all a safe and speedy return.
