HARBOUR BOARD VACANCY

CITY COUNCIL TO APPOINT ME. It.' FLETCHER'S SUCCESSOR. The death of MrTTtoberfc Fletcher, a member otf the ' Wellington Harbour •Beard, will not necessitate ah election to fill the vacSncy. Tlio Legislature evidently had in mindi the expense of such: by-elections to tho rate-paying public, "and has provided for such contingencies. The filling of the vacancy, in this case is provided ./for in section 18 of tho Harbours Amendment Act of 1910, which says :—"Wheira representative of any constituent district va< cates his office on the board through tho operation of the last preceding section (which includes the contingency of death), the local authority' of that) district shall forthwith appoint somo (jjialih'ed person in his place, as a representative of that district."

In this case- the late Mr, Fletcher represented Wellington City, and the local authority is the Wellington City Council, which will probably make tho appointment'at its next meeting. The late Mr. Fletcher was also, a member of the Wellington Licensing Committee, but as there is little for that body to do at present it is noli likely that an/ step will bo taken to iill the- vacancy until the date of the .'next election, unless pressure, is taught to bear on the controlling autherity.
