THE SHEARING SEASON

LABOUR PROSPECTS; 'A shortage 'of shearers for the coming season is predicted by' the secretary of the Shearers'• Federation, Mr. C. Grayndler. Enlistmonts have thinned the ranks -of the shearers during the lasj four years, and Mr. Grayndler states "that despite tho exemption of -many shearers by the military service .boards, few experienced men are applying to the head office for information at the present 'time. *• He suggested yesterday that the sheep owners might have to be satisfied with small boards, ■including partially trained men.' !

■ A Dominion reporter, who made inquiries in other directions, learned that the representatives of the sheep owners here are not . disposed to take a .very serious view of the position. They ,'nre inclined to believe, in view of the exemption of .probably some/hundreds of shearers by ;tho military service boards during the last twelve months, that the - shortage is not going to 1)0 much more acute 'tlian it was last season. There were predictions of a very 'grave shortage a year ago. But as a ; matter of fact the sheep owners, bv making the best use of the labour,3yail-, able, and bv working extremelv. hard themselves in manv instances.-- :got through the shearing season fairly successfully.
