LICENSING COMMITTEE
BENCH ISSUES TWO WARNINGS. A meeting of the Wellington Licensing Coinmiiteo was held yesterday. Mr. \V. G. ttiddell, S.M., presided, and associated with him were M66srs. > W. J. Helyer, U. J. '.Tiller- ! ■ ' \ Tho chairman said thd police ropoH with regard to tho hotels in Wellington showed that during tho last quarter all had been well conducted, with the exception of the .Caledcaiian Hotel. In that onsej the polico stated that tho hotel had been carelessly conducted, and it was to he hoped that the licensee would improve the management during the incoming quarter. The Hon. C. H. Izard stated- that he represented the owners of t'ho Caledonian Hotel, and had seen the liconnee? upon whom ho had impressed the seriousness of the position. He felt sure that there would bo no further complaints. . Application was made for the trans-r for of the license of the ABbion Hotel from Alice Herdman to John James Firth. Mr. Albert Wylie appeared for Firth. ; Inspector Marsnck stnted that up to within a few days ago tho conduct of Firth had been satisfactory. During tho period which he held the' temporary license. The inspector called Sergeant Martin and Constable Demuth; who stated that about midnight on August 28 they saw Firth in a state of intoxication in Courtenay Place. . The' chairman pointed out to Firth that it : was very prejudicial to his position as licensee of the hotel to be found in such circumstances, even if it were in his own time. The committee would grant the • transfer, but it was to he hoped the warning, of. tho committee would have somo effect upon his future conuuet.
