Cairo, August Z); On July 1 the Auckland Mounted Rides relieved tho Wellington Mounted Rifles in occupying a short sector in tho Jordan Valley, tho work consisting of patrolling and wiring in front of tho defences, and keeping daily touch with the onemy' patrols. Working nartits from the brigado were constantly employed in draining stagnant water and in other measures against mosquitoes. On July 22 and 23 tho enemy shelled the bivouac area, but the casualties were very light. On July 14 tho enemy heavily shelled the sector, and attncked from Abu Telliil and Telorrishe before daylight. Tho attack was pressed against tho Light Horse Brigade on tho right of the No.v Zealand Brigade. Eight enemy aeroplanes assisted in the attack. The Wellington Mounted Rifles pushed forward to attack tho enemy flank, drovo it in, and captured 61 prisoners, and tho Canterbury Mounted Rifles cleared the country for a mile to tho westward uudnr heavy shell fire. Tho enemy was driven off with heavy casualtius, losing 400 prisoners, aiid the brigade withdrew to bivouac in the ovoning, and continued tho previous routine. On July 19 the
brigade moved to a camp in tho back area, and on July- 27 went out of tho valley to a rest camp.
