IN MESOPOTAMIA
THE EXPEDITION UP THE EUPHRATES GENERAL MARSHALL'S FIRST DISPATCH London, August 30. General Marshall's first dispatch covert the operations in Mesopotamia from October 1, 1917, to March' 81, 1918. It gives details of the successful expedition up tho Euphrates ogainst tho Turkish concentration _ beyond Hit, and also of tho operations on the Diala River, the ejecting of the Turks from ithanikin, and the opening cf the road into northern Persia. Tlie dispatch explains that care was taken not to camp troops within the Holy Cities—Kcrbela and 1 Ncdjef. Some irreconcilablcs in Ncdjef fired on troops which were oxorcisii-jg near tho town, causing a few casualties. General Marshall did not desire to, injure a town full of sacred memories, and tho Mahommedans decided to punish two of the leading Sheikhs responsible for the offence, but the Sheikhs fled, and were outlawed. Captain W. M. Marshall, political officer in Nedjcf, was murdered, on March 21. Tho Jlritish surrounded tho town with military posts, joined up with barbed wire, until., those implicated were-givon up.— Aus.-N.Z. Cablo Assn.-Rcutcr.
