PUTORINO SOLDIER SETTLEMENT

Sir,—A few days ago an article was published showing the sm—.'sses and failures on tho soldiers' settlements. Amongst them, of course, Putorino, Rata, was included, audi the return for this place was one withdrawn, one doubtful, otherwise everything in the garden was lovely. Nothing was said concerning tho men having to petition the Crown Lands Department to allow them to put their cows qui with outsiders becauso of the lack of water last season. Finally, a pumping installation was put in, which has been anything but a success, owing to the plant being installed too late, in tho .season, and thero not being enough storage for each section. Last season the Department, before putting the pumping plant in, commissioned tho Public Works Department to build a. dam, which, if success had attended the undertaking, would have solved the difficulty. But,, bad luck to it, it failed. At the end of last milking season the Crown Lands Department commissioned an engineer to build a dam to supply the Putorino estate. Wo want to know what has happened to this water scheme, and where is the water coming from for this season? "Wo shall lie in the soup again ft things do not soon commeneo to get a move on, and instead of one going out, and one doubtful, thero will bs quite a few of these men who will have to give up their holdings. After going through tho thick of things oni the various fronts, and doing our bit for King and country, where we had to get a move on. tho best thing for us is for someone to get a move on, and get water for us, so that we shall have a chance of making a return on our outlay, and making Putorino the good place'it undoubtedly could he made.—l am, <-tc, ONE 01,0 THK STRUGGLING BOYS.
