"SPURLOS VERSENKT"

CLEAR CASE AGAINST THE U-BOAT PIRATES

APPALLING REVELATION OF . HUN BRUTALITY London, August 28. A clear case of a German submarine attempting to "sink without a trace" (spurlos versenkt") is revealed by the French Government. The steamer Lyn(liano was torpedoed without warning off tlio Spanish coast, and two whaleboats and a raft were set afloat with the survivors. The 'submarine rose- and charged one whaloboat, and cut it in halves. The occupants of the- other whaleboat thought it was accidental, and strove to rescue their comrades, but tho submarine rammed and smashed it!, killing the captain and woman passenger. The submarine then turned and rammed the debris in order to make sure. It next rammed theraft several times.

The commander of the submarine, seeing the Lyndiane's second officer swimming to the ship, ran him down, and tho propeller cut him to pieces. It then resumed the task of smashing the obstinate raft, killing and maiming many during tho process. Eventually the raft was scattered in pieces, aud the submarino disappeared, leaving the survivors clinging to the debris. Though tho attempt to sink without leaving any t.race failed, only eight of the stricken survivors were rescued out of forty-six.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. SPANISH "STEAMER SUNK London, August 28.
