OTAGO V. AYELLINGTON. The annual telegraphic match between tho above clubs is scheduled lor Saturday next. As Wellington lost to Canterbury mid Canterbury lost to Otago, the southern team's chances look rather good. Tho local team is as follows:—Messrs. Barnes (captain), AV. E. Mason, Davies, AV. Maokay, Kelling, Still, James, Godtschalk, S. Gyles, Leo, M'Xnir, E. S. Taylor, Brutoii, and A. Clark, Reserves: Jlessrs. AV. C. "White, Tanner, and S. Ityulknor. The services of Messrs. tJi 1 , . Anderson, Foully, AV. F. Barraud, antj Purchas are not available on this occasion, and the Wellington team is consequently not at full strength. _ The Otago team, on the other baud, will bo ft. stronger side than that wliich recently defeated Canterbury. ' It will be captained by Mr. 11. A. Clelnnd (New Zealand champion in 1899), and will include Mr. P. N. Stewart, the Auckland champion, and the Rev. Friberg, the Marlborougli champion, both of whom have recently settled in Duncdin. The game Stenhouse r. Still (Board 6) is to bo played "over the board" hero, as the formor is now in I wimp at Trentham.. If tho local representatives play steadily, and avoid clerical errors, a close match may bo looked for. LOCAL TOURNEYS. The Wellington. Chess Club's current championship tourney was advanced a further stage last week, the results being as follow:— Davies (1) v. Piirchas (0); Fouhy (1) t. Clark (0); Still (1) v. Anderson (0); KeJling a) v. •James (0); and Davies (*) v. James (1). Tyer won by default ifrom Leo, wlm Ims retired from the contest. AV. 10. Mason is now leading with eight clear wins, closely followed by Davies, 8J—1; Barnes, 6—l; and Godtschalk, 3—l. Further to the rear nre: Kelling, 7—2; James, 4J—2i; Still, 5-3; and Fouhy, s}—3}. Davies has won three more games in the club's current handicap tourney, and now has a strong lead, having played eleven games and won them all. It will bo interesting to seo if any of his three remaining opponents can arrest his triumphant inarch.

In the AVellington South Club's, annual handicap tourney Mr. W. J. I Harpar is leading, having played eight games, and won them all. Tho next best scores are: G. P. Anderson, 8— 1; Welton, 7—2; H. J. Thompson, 6— 2; AV. Berry, 5—2; Purchas, 4—3; and Eiio, u—4. There are' six moro rounds to be played in this contest. The best tallies to dato in the Wellington Working Men's Club's annual handicap chess tourney are as follow: —AV. C. "White, 7—o; Barnes, o—1: H. Douglas, 3—l: S. Faulknor, 5—2; Long, 4—2; Costello, 3-2; Wild, 4-3; J. Reid, 5—3; nnd Larking, 6—5. In tho Ngaio Club's tourney, Mr. H. L. James is one game ahead of Messrs. Topp, Lindsay, and Westbrooke. Tho prize list .depends on tho results of four outstanding games. Tho annual- AVairarapa match, North v. South, was played at Masterton on Thursday evening, when the North team won by the smallest margin possible, scoring 6 games to tho South's 5. I'our well-known congress players took part— J. A. Connell (Carterton) winning from G. A. Jones (Masterton) at Board 1, and F. Kuinmer (Mauricevillo) winning from S. AV. Moore (Carterton) at Board 2. At Board 3 tho Rev. Mr. Compton (Greytown) drew with Mr. Tluvtlo, ivlio, as winner of the club's 1918 toiirney, received the Dagg Shield during the evening, the presentation being made by Mr. Sykes
