Tho council lias been advised of tho following deaths on active sorvico:

Tho provision of free clerical training for partialis disabled wounded soldiers has been continued, an additional 76 men having been accepted during tho year, making a total of IS6 since the inception of tho scheme. The proportion of effective students is again small, due to some extent to tho mental condition of the men and tho nature of their injuries. The council found it necessary to specify a general educational standard below which students wcro not accepted, and this has, to somo extent, proved beneficial. It is, however, doubtful whether tho scheme has justified tho expectations of tho council.
Tlio subscription of all members on activo service lias been mot by tho society, and, taking these payments into account, the following is a statement of the total contributions of tho society in connection with the ivar to date:—Contributions to various war funds, £1025; returned soldiers' tuition scheme-, £436 17s. 3d.; subscriptions of members on activo service- paid by-society, £362 ss. 6d.
The council, on behalf of the membership, extends its sincere- congratulations to Mr. John S. Barton on his recent appointment as si Stipendiary Magistrate. Mr. Barton was elected as one of tho representatives of Wellington, district to tho first council in 1909, and has held his seat continuously since that date. During that period ho has served with distinction on every committee of the council; was president in the years 1915-17, and lias, in addition, performed valuablework for the society in many directions. "While Mr. Barton's retire, raent from active participation in accountancy interests is much to be regretted," the. report adds, "it is a> mutter for congratulation that the Dominion has secured his services m such an imnortant canaeity."
The benevolent fund, established early in 1917, has received fair support from the members of the society, and a full list of the contributions lias been acknowledged and distributed. Tho capital fund has increased to £1262 35., and tho income account is in credit to the extent of £174 2s. Gd. There has been no charge against the fund to Juno 30 last, but since- thai; date the board of control considered an application for relief, and ■ has granted a weekly allowance to the wife and child of a late, member of tho society.
Tito income and oxpondituro account discloses a surplus for the year of £313 10s. 4d.j and the accumulated fund stands at £2472 11s. Id.
