PRISONER SENTENCED
THEFT FROM A VESSEL. In the Supreme Court yesterday afternoon, before IFis Honour Jlr. Justice Hnsking, John Bird, who during tho criminal sessions pleaded guilty to tho theft of ten tins of herrings iii tomato sauce from the hold of a steamer in port. Binl was not. previously dealt, with because the police had other charges pending against him. These, charges were taken in Ihe Jfagistrate's Court and dismissed. Mr. P. J, O'Kogar., who appeared for Hird, made a strong plea for probation. He pointed out that Bird was a married man, and had been at work on the wharf for nine years, most of the time in the employ of the Union Company. His Honour said that lie could not ignore Ihe fact thai Ihe prisoner had commilHl theft: when in a position of trust; that the offence was a serious one because uf Ihe fact IVM the whole of ihe wharf labourer-. V'lv held under •uispicion. and be could nut isimro the fact that Ihe alfidavils showed ihal other goods were found in tho premises. Ho could not grant probation. Bird wns sentenced to sis mouths' imprisonment.
