A young man named Torleen A. Kichster, described as a Dane, was committed for trial at Masterton on Wednesday on a charge of stealing a diamond ring,' valued at JJCO, the property of Mrs. Sim6on, a nativo living at Lansdowne. Bail, in two sureties of ioO each, was allowed. An effort is being made to form a branch of the American Chatanqua in Masterton. Mjss Marjorie Cowan, representative of the movement, is interviewing leading citizens on the subject. The Dagg shield, in connection with the Masterton Chess Club, was on Thursday evening presented to Mr. H. L. Thistle, the 1918 winner. Members of the Lady Liverpool Committee in Masterton on Thursday packed two hundred Christmas parcels, to be dispatched to the soldiers in Egypt. The Feathcrston Patriotic Committee has appointed Messrs. A. Clark and_A.lorns as a delegation from the local Welfare Committee to attend a conference at Masterton on August 29. Messrs. M. B. Tait (chairman),' and A. C. Holms will, in company with Mr. Q. Donald, wait upon the Claims Board on Monday in support, of a scheme of medical, maternal, and dental benefits submitted by Messrs. J. H. Fieldhouse and A. C. Holms on behalf of the Second Division Leasue.
A deputation from the directors of the Feathorston Co-operative Dairy Company is visiting Wellington to-day for the purpose of conferring with the City Council as to the supply of milk in connection with the now scheme of distribution. At a special general meeting of the Featherston Branch of the Second Division League the following resolution, moved by the (secretary and seconded by Sir. 0. J. Dannhey, was carried unanimously: "That this league reaffirm its advocacy of separation allowances to tho dependants of all soldiers on a basis consistent with the demands of justice, tho financial resources of the Dominion, and the cost of living factor, tho payment of ,£2 2s. per week to a wife in order that, as in the case of the unmarried soldier, the allotment of its. per day be available for active service contingencies or home-coining, ami an increased allowance to widowed mothers (wholly dependent) being essential. Also that the recipients of'financial assistance be not sublet to a penalty of fid. per day. All units of Parliament, the Press, and the public favourable to betterment by right of the provisions for soldiers* dependants to be invited to give hearty support to the foregoins overtures." It was decided that .£lO be forwarded to the Central Executive for the Provincial Information Bureau, and ,C 2 10s. Dominion levy.
