Mayoress's Entertainment Committee,

A meeting of tlie Hayorees's Entertainment Committee was held in the Mayor's room of the Town Hull yesterday morning, Mrs. J. P. Luke presiding. In introducing the business of, tlio meeting, Mrs. Luke pointed out that it was tho first to Jje held since fho inception of the , Saturday night entertainments-for soldiers held in the Town Hall every week. The reason |as that members of tho committee had subscribed so freely to the expenses of these entertainmerits that no funds had been needed. However, ten months had gone by since they were first begun, and funds were now needed. Hence the meeting. Mia» Hock (hon. secretary) and Miss Clarke (hon. treasurer) read the report and balance-sheet respectively, both showing tho excellence of the work that had Been done in regard to these entertainments. Tho balancesheet of the committee showed subscriptions amounting (o J!B3 10s. Gd., and expenditure 19s. 7d. In addition to this latter amount the Mayor's fund'had paid towards these Saturday night dances from Saturday, December 17, 1017, to the present date an amount of .£7B 6s. Bd. Both tho balance-sheet and the report were adopted by the meeting, and Mrs. Moorhouse proposed a hearty vote of thanks to both ladies for their valnaolo services in this connection, the motion being carried. It was decided that from now on meetings would be held at stated intervals, tho date to be fixed after consultation with the Mayor's Entertainment Committee which was to meet very shortly. 'An executive committee to confer from time to time with tho Mayor's committee was set up, the members consisting of Mrs. Luke (president), Mis"s Bock, Miss Clarke, Mrs. Moorhouse, Mrs. Barltrop, Mrs. Murphy, and Miss Townsend. It was also decided to enlarge the general committee. Another matter that was discussed was the. wearing of badges, and it was resolved that members' of tho committee) must wear badges at the Saturday night entertainments, and that other workers would bo supplied with passes. This had been found necessary owing to'tho number of unauthorised strangers, other than soldiers' friends, who had gained admittance to theso dances from time to time. The rule, as is well known, is that each soldier is at liberty to bring one lady with him to these dances, but no more. Tho great appreciation which had been expressed by soldiers, n.c.o.'s, and officers alike for the entertainments was mentioned, and it was hoped that tho publie would continue to liberally support so worthy an object. Subscriptions fiom tho following were received at the meeting :—Mcsdaines W. Nathan, Blundell, M. Myers, Hutchison, Gell, Post, Aitken, Kirkor, Moorhouse, Barltrop, Bridger, Hamer, Brico, Crawford, Townsend, Gellatloy, Teats, Luke, Murphy, yealo, Misses Townsend, Marks, Gunn, Powell, Read, Cederholm, Hendry, Smith. The committee wishes to thank tho following ; for contributions and assistance:—Messrs. ■ David Nathan and Co., for bntler; Gumj ble and Creed, for, sandwiches; the .Wellington Co-operative .Fanners, milk; ! Victoria Laundry; the Trontham Band; , also Mr. Leslie and the Town Hall staff i for their kind consideration and assistance in. various ways. Kindergarten Demonstrations, The second of tho series of demonstrations of kindergarten work arranged by the Kindeiwtcn Council -vas given in tho Masonic' Hall yesterday afternoon, tho demonstrators being on this occasion tho Tariinaki Street ibra-nch, with Miss Morris, Miss Herzog, and Miss Scott as directors. Thero was a good attendance of onlookers, who all appeaired to bo I keenly interested in what they saw, and • Miss lieilly, principal of iho kindergar- | lens, gavo a preliminary explanation of j what the association was aiming at iu arranging theso demonstrations. The subject for tho afternoon was "Work on the Wharf," and tho main thought running through tho various activities waa tho co-operation of interests. "Where soino fathers worked. What they do, and why. Where the bouts go and whero they come from. What they carry," formed tho subjects of conversation in .lie. three ■ littlo groups that were formed in the niarked-off space on tho floor, and if occasionally some startling information was given by an a'bsent-minded infant, there was, on tho other hand, consider, able familiarity with ships and what pertains to them also shov.i. Possibly tho greatest amount of plcasmre was taken in'the table work, ono little group building a model wharf and sheds, not forgetting the coloured lights, another making clay models of wonderful boats, and a third group sailing iboals of walnut shells with tiny sails, which recklessly voyaged upon a stormy sea, blue as Reckett's could make it, surging on a largo black tea-tray. Tlurc were many shipwrecks and adventures enough to fiil the hearts of the navigators, by proxy with much delight, to say'nothing 0 f the keenly interested onlooker's. 'That a very real knowledge is cultivated in the kindergartens .of tho activities by means of which'our nation thrives, was manifested in yesterday's exhibition of work A brief talk by Miss Edith Howes concluded the afternoon's work. To-day the Brooklyn branch will demonstrate.
