The Hon. Sir James Alien will not return from tin.' South Island until tomorrow. He had intended to be back today, but ho found it impossible to arrange to get back to Christchurch from Otira in time to catch the ferry steamer. The Wellington Education Board yes" teiday passed a resolution of sympathy with the relatives of Mr. R. M.'Callum, a member ot the tend, who recently lost ii son.
It was announced at the • meeting ot tho Geological Section of the Philosophical Society last evening that Mr. E. K. Lomas, M.A., M.Sc, scienco lecturer at the Training College for Teachers, had becfu elected a follow of the Royal Geographical Society, London.
Sapper F. W. Soulhgate. son of Mr. R. .1. Southgatc, of Masterton, and formerly of I'etone, who left with the Sixth Reinforcements, has received a commission in the Royal Flying Corps.
Mr. Herbert Sidebottoln, n distinguished student of the war, and a brilliant writer, lias joined the staff of the London "Tiniijs." He formerly contributed to "The Manchester Guardian." His articles have been a leading! feature of English military comment throughout the war.
Lieutenant Vai. Hunter, formerly of Takflka, who was attached to the Officers' College, Cambridge University, is row on the staff of tho New Zealand iiiftc Brigade, and has been back in tho lino "somewhere- in Fiance" since Juno last. While in England (says the "Golden Bay Times") he won tho single sculls at tho Cambridge, regatta, on Anzac'Day, and was. awarded a gold medal. He was also a member of the winning oijjht, which secured a silver enp, op which the New Zealander's name- is inscrilTed. The university football team, of which Lieutenant Hunter' was a nioruber. only lost one malch during the season.
Mr. .1. A. Taylor, junr., of the Insurance Department of W. M. Bannavyne and Co.. Ltd.. was presented by tho staff with a case of pipes, on tho eve of his departure to join i:ho Flying School at Christchurch. ■
Prior to leaving Masterton on transfer to Wangnnui, Mr. T. R. Allen, agent for the Public Trust. Office, was presented by the legal profession with n silver spirit kettle, suitablv inscribed.. Mr. Allen has been succeeded in Masterton by Mr. B. Fairfax Ciiolmely, lato of the Tarannki district.
Lieutenant I. C. Carter, of tho First Auckland Infantry (Battalion, was some months ago awarded tho Military Cross, and particulars of how ho obtained that honour appeared in the Auckland "Star" on August 15. After leading his men in an advance of a mile and a. half, Lieutenant Carter took charge of a company much demoralised by casualties, and helped to maintain the position for two days, under heavy shell and machine-gun fire. He is the son of Mr. John H. Carter, Cuba Street, Wellington. Mr. Tom Pollard, of Greymouth, will arrive from the south this morning, and will leave again for the south to-morrow night. ■ ■ ' Deep sympathy will be felt throughout the Jlorowhenua district for Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Bryant, Manuka.ii, at lie news of the sudden death of their second son, Francis Sutton liasseti Bryant. Deceased was well known throughout, the whole district, and the news of his death will come as a great shock to many. Mr. and Mrs. Bryant lately lost their eldest son at the front.
