. TRANSPORT IN COMJItTROE. ■ Mr. H.\ Swunton, a representative of the Overseas Shipping lienresentativcß' Association, in the course of a lecture delivered at tho Melbourne Wool Exchange a few days ago, expressed a -warning'to ship owners that after the war, when the Government requisitioning and control of shipping was relinquished, tho British shipper would have a stiff light in competition with the neutral and certain Allied ship owners. He characterised the profits made by certain companies of neutral and Allied nations as "fabulous," and quota! tho case of a Japanese company, which recently paid into a special reservo fund £1,000,000 for "war risks and depreciation" on vessels yet to he built or purchased. In addition to other disbursements to special funds, the company had placed £160.000 to a fund required by la.iv, mid arter I hat the net profits totalled nearly £-5.131,000. In view of the ncuto dearth of tonnage, the best economic use of available shipping was. of course, imperative. Hritish tonnage lost from the outbreak of war un to August 31 last amounted to about 7.730 000 tons. Against this 3,800,000 tons had been added, showing a decrease of about 3.930.(!C0 tons. In attempting to cone with the acute tonnage problem by making the best economic, use of existing shipping, a vessel should complete her voyage with the fewest calls possible. Whenever possible, her cargo carrying cnpaelty should be entirely absorbed, when her bull was down to tho Plimsoll mark.

Tho vessel ran out 11 knots an hour who will run in the general coast trade between Auckland and Dunedin.

The Kapiti will re-enter tho Wanganui trade at tho end of the week. The Oorinna is to leave Now Plymouth either to-day or to-morrow for Wellington. Tho Ifaru, which left Wellington at 6.45 p.m on Monday for Nydia Bay, returned to port, weather-hound, ten hours later, flhc left Wellington again yesterday ingThe Suva correspondent of the Auckland "Star" states that as was expected the remainder of- the crew of tho schooner A. M, Baxter were picked up by thp Government flteamer llanadi. They wero not able to get to land till two days after the wreck, and had an arduous time owing to the boat leaking badly, necessitating bailing all the time. The natives unojrtook to bring. them .to Suva, and they were oil their way there when they were picked up. Latest reportß indicate that the wreck is breaking up, and the copra drifting out to sea. A salvage party had on August 14 loft for the wreck. The results of the first day's work at salving the machinery and pear of tho steamer Itofcnder was landed at the Bailway Wharf last night.
