H.M.S. DRAKE SUNK
FORMER FLAGSHIP 'ON THE AUSTRALIAN STATION. Melbourno, August 20. It is announced that tho warship' Drake, which was tho last flagship on tho Australian Station, lias been sunk by a torpedo from a German submarine, and that nineteen of tho crew wero killed—Press Assn. [H.M.S. Drake, an armoured cruiser of 11,100 tons, will bo remombered by many New Zealand people, as slio visited the Dominion whilo on tho Australian Station. Tho above report of her having been sunk requires explanation, for sho was torpedoed off tho north coast of Ireland, with the loss of one officor and eighteen mon, on October 2 last year. Sho reached harbour, and then sank in shallow water. If it is correct that she has been sunk again, the vessel must havo been salved ajid Testored to sorvico. Tho Drake, which was built at Pembroko and completed in 1902, carried about 900 men. Sho was armed with two 9.2-inch, sixteen 6-inch, and twelve 12-pounder guns, and had a speed of 21 knots.]
