NEW SOLDIERS' HOSPITAL
HOSPITAL BOARD IN A QUANDARY.
Regarding the paragraph relating to the taking over by the Defence Department of the Miraiiiar Health Home as an auxiliary hospital for ilie treatment of «>ldiers,'it was stated, that "the Defence Department had proposed to mate some additions to the Victoria Hospital, but had refrained from doing so in deference to the wishes of the llospilarauthorfty." Jlr.i'lL Baldwin, chairman of the .Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, says that this statement is at complete variance with the facts, Some two months ago Colonel Valintino approached the board with a request that mora accommodation should lie provided at (he Hospital for soldier patients, and the board, realising the necessity which existed, at 6ncc set itself out to assist the military authorities as much as possible'. A site between tho rear (or southern sidai of tho Children's Hospital and the Victoria Homo for Chronic Invalids (now being used as a Soldiers' Hospital) was. selected, and sketch plans for a place, which provided for GO beds, were prepared by tno board's architect, Mr. F. do J. Clere. The board even went as far as to agree to take the'building over from Iho Defence Departmont at valuation. In view of these fadts Sir. Baldwin cannot understand the statement referred to .ibove. Sineo the board's 'communication of a couple of months ago, nothing ha 6 been heard on the subject frtmi Colonel' (Dr.) Valintino or tho Defence Department.
