SALE FOR. THE RED CROSS. The King's gifts of wines were the chief attraction at the Red Cross sale of wines, spirits, liqueurs, and cigars at the AVuol Exchange, Coleiuun'Street, London. On each, bottle was a. medallion showing it had come from Hie cellars at iiuckinsham Palace
There was no standing room when tho royal champagnes were offered. The first lots brought an average of Jtij a dozen, and the next i!2B or more. The last brought X'so a dozen, and one lot five guineas a bottle.
Next came royal port of a vintage of 1S:!O at JIIS a dozen: theu part of 183+ at JMB; 1863 port at £20; and finally King Edward's private port, the first dozsU bringing 50 guineas. Claret at .£lO a dozen and eherry at .Cl 5 were other lots from the royal collars. The bidding ran to ,£SO for a dozen of curacao: ,£IOO for the next, and .£IOO for tho third; nearly £" a boltlo for the loi. An oddly-shaped bottlß of old Jamaica.' rum sold for jijO. Three bottles of rum botljed in 177G, after having been 20 years in wood, brought £3. Other lots contained rum bottled in 1708. •
Altogether tho King's gifts brought .£2038.
Of the wines and spirits given by others a brandy of 1702 was sold for J2lO <i lwttie, fcoffered, and fold again for £i. A dozen bottles of old brandies, one 178G, brought 100 guineas. Choice lots fell in Lord Wenlock. Major 'Werner, and Major Burgoyne, M.P. The total amount received for the first day was ,£11,550, all of which roos to tho Red Cross funds.
