CHESS NOTES
WELLINGTON V. NGAIO. The Wellington and Ngaio Clubs met for the first lime last Monday, the contest, which took place at JXgaio, proving very enjoyable. A cordial welcome wns extended to the visitors by Mr. I , '. .1. Brookcr, president of Hip local club, and wus happily resiicndi'd to by Mr. I'uirlias, captain of' the Wellington team. The Njiaio team made the belter score at Ilia first six board?, but the Wellington team were n more emu lot, anil they finally won a hard-fought match through their' superiority at the lower boards. The scores were as follows:—

Good progress was made last week in tho Wellington Chess Club's championship tourney, when the seventh round and some back games were disposed of as follows:—S. Gyles (J) v. Anderson (i); Barnes (1) v. Tver (0); Still (1) v. 'Fouliy (0); Mason (1) v. Purchas (0): Fouhy (1) v. Anderson (0);' Kelll:ig (1) v. A. Clark (.(I); and W. Mackay (1) v. Anderson (i)). The game James v. flavins is incomplete, and stands adjourned in a very even state. The fixture Lee v. Gudlschalk goes to the latter by default, as Mr. Lee is retiring from the contest owing to the uncertainty of his movements. The best scores to date are as follow:—W. E. Mason, 7 wins no losses; Davies, 6-0; Barnes, s—l; James, -1—1: and Godtschalk, 3-1. Mr. Davies has won two more games in. the club's annual handicap tournoy, in which contest, he is leading with eight clear wins to his credit. Members are looking forward lo the annual telegraphic match against the Otago Club, which tho southerners arc anxious to play on the evenings of August 31 and September 7. The Wellington Club is accordingly endeavouring to get the use of a, wire on those evenings.
