SOLDIERS V. SOLDIERS. There was a fair attendance at Athletic Park on Saturday, when Ihe Trenthnm A. team defeated a selection from tho 44th Reinforcements by 21 points to 5, The play was not very brilliant, being patchy in parts. It was intended that I'reiiiliiuu A should have, played against a team from Featherston camp, but this could not be arranged. Trentham played in black, and the 44ths in yellow and black. Immediately after the start Trentham got tho ball from a scrum and the backs got away, but were held up near the line. Trentham managed to gain ground by lino tactics, but the Piths' defence was impenetrable. The scene of play shifted to the Trentham 25, and the 44thsi got possession from a line-out. The ball began to spin amongst the 44ths' backs, when Heap cleverly intercepted a pass, and gained an advantage by kicking down field, ami following up. Tho Trentham backs played with nice combination, and some creditable individual performances were witnessed. Trentham got the ball. from tho mush near the halfway line, and sweeping towards tho 44ths* line overpowered their opponents, who failed to prevent Davidson from scoring a good try near the posts. The try was not conVcrled: Trentlmm A, 3; 44th Eeinforeements, 0. B. Roberts did some good work in the ensuing play, and was noticeable in a very fast run. The play became somewhat patchy for a while, until the Trentliam backs got going in a fine movement, which ended in Heap getting across. There was no goal: Trentham A, 6; 44ths, 0. At last, through an opening created by Roberts, who dodged through a considerable amount of opposition, the yellows came very near to scoring, but lost tho chance through an infringement on the part of ii player right on the Trentham line, a splendid opening wa.s afterwards made by Roberts, and had one of the backs run on, instead of passing, the 44lhs must undoubtedly have obtained a try. At half-time there was no increase in the wore.
The second spell opened in an lininlcresting manner, the ])lny on both sides ■ lacking cohesion. Trentham fried hard to open up Hie play, and at last their efforts were rewarded with success, when a swift passing rush ended a touch-down by Howie. Davidson made a Rood attempt with the. kick, but (lie ball unfortunately struck the posts: Trentliam A, 9; .Uth'Reinforcements, 0. The yellows managed'to change (lie venue to Trentham end, and Story had bad luck in not Bcpring. He took a pass, and was l'ust about to run in when lie was promptly collared. A line-out followed a second or two afterwards, and from this the ilths got the ball, and Stuart crossed over after a scramble near the nosts. l.ohberts look the kick, and placed the ball between the uprights. Roberts made a great individual run, and came near to scoring, but he wim overhauled, and had to |;tes on the .ball, and the 44ths Inst uoseession. Shortly before the end of the game. Hosiers broke away from half-way, and had a clear run in, touching down behind the posts. No ?oal resulted. Trentham A.' 15; •ttth Reinforcements, 5. A few minutes later Packer notched another try, and iust before tho whistle blow • Davidson crossed over, and tho game closed with the score: Trentham A, 21; 41th Reinforcements, 5. Jlr. l>. H. Porkinson was referee. COLLEGE V. HUTT. As a "curtain-raiser," to the previous match a game was played between Wellington ColloßO and Hutt juniors. The Collegians won by U points to 9. after a hotly contested game. For the winners, Nicholls kicked a coal from a mark, also from a free kick. Davidson and Toocood each scored it trv. Sicholls converting that obtained bv The Hutt score was obtained by Grierson. who kicked a goal from a mark, and Dennehy and ITazelwood onch scored a try Mr. A. C. Kitto was referee.
