POULTRY NOTES

(By "Chanticleer.")

Push on tho Hatching. I The breeding season is hero, and poultryI keepers should hatch, as many chickens as possible. The season lasts only a few weeks, and cndß at tho end of October. Tho farmer HcarraJy beginß hatching by that time, as he .has fow brooders. It is desirable that the farmer should go on hatching till • March, as it is ho who supplies the tablo poultry market. At the .Grand National sale. held last week, there was an entry of 250(1 birds, full 95 per cent, being raisod by farmers. Poultrymen may contribute a. good, deal to tho ogg-production, but if it were not for tho farmer thero would bo a famino in tablo poultry in New Zealand. For winter egglaying, now till October is the timo to' hatch chickens; lato-hd.tchod chickens have no time to develop befiore the cold weather arrives, if hatched later than October. From evidence, it appoars as if production will: grow less' unless something is done to iprovido poultry foods. The breakfast egg will becomo more «>f a luxury, and tho public will have to pay moro as production decreases. It is to bo regretted that in a. country like New Zealand wo oannot produce. sufuchiiit eggs without importation. Tho feed problem lias got to be remedied, and if pricos rise much higher than at present, wo may rest assured that production -will suffor. An Incubator Tip. Tho best Incubators usually register tho same degree of warmth all over the egg ! chamber. Nevertheless, if tho machine bo not perfectly level, the radiation of heat will be disturbed, with tho result that an unusual distribution of -warmth 'will ho caused. And. in the case of a uoorly-con-structed incubatdr, the same condition is often noted. That being the case, it is necessary to- use judgment in the manipulation of tho egga. Tl eir position should bo ohanged every day, for tho mason that if they stay in the same .nlaco somo will receive too much leat. and others too little, and w.:hen that happens tho hatch is not a good one. Tho right thing to do is to alt*r tho -position every day of every egg. The middle row should be moved to tho front or back, those on tho sides to tho middle, aid so on, and every time the egg tray js returned to tho machine it sViould ho reversed if naS3ible. In this way-all-the eggs will Bhajo the .same conditions with a better chance of a satisfactory hatch being brought off. If left in the aamo position the. outturn is not so like}y to be satisfactory, as too much heat in one part of the egg cham. ber may kill, one lot there, and too low a temperature in another part may may bring about the samo result. It is a good plan t/D'give all tho eggs a turn in different paptß of tho egg chamber. EiGG-LAYING N.Z. UTILITT POULTRY CLUB'S POOR. TEEN'.tH COMPETITION. Following is the official report of tho eighteenth wea:k, ending Augiwt 13, of tho fourteenth egg-laying coinpcutiou, held by the N.Z. UtUitp- Poultry Club, at PapaLIGHT BREEDS.
