" A TOWN PARASITE " NUMEROUS BY-LAW CASES The proceedings at the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning were presided over by Mr. S.'K .UTaTlhy, S.JI. "This is one of the parasites (if this town," said -Inspector Mars.ick in the case of Jeremiah O'Reilly, who wns accused of being a rotfti* and vagabond, haying begged alms on Lambtou Quay. "He won't do any work, and bus bee.ii accosting soldiers and asking them for money," added the inspector. O'Heiliy was sentenced to six months' imprisonment with hard labour. Walter Watson was convicted and ordered to come up far sentence whnn called upon on a charge of behaving in a threatening manner whereby a. breach of the- peace was occasioned in Manners Street on Thursday.
For insobriety, Michael Coleman was fined 205., in default seven days' imprisonment, and Jesse Underwood, against whom there were 55 previous convictions, was convicted and ordered to come np for sentence when called upon, and was prohibited at his own suggestion.
Patrick Kavanagh was iined £">, with 17s. Cd. costs, on one 'information of allowing (irelvo cows to ivander, .ami on another he was fined 10s., with 17s. lid. costs. Mr. I'. Levi, who appeared for the Onslow Borough Council, which prosecuted, paid ho did not know whether defendant's previous convictions did not run into hundreds. "It is rather a large order for twelve cows to be on thp road.," remarked Mr. M'Carthy to defendant. "Oh, they didn't do any- harm, Your Worship," replied defendant, amidst laughter. James Proctor, a taxi-driver, was charged with having left a tar standing outside a hotel for longer than the prescribed lime, with having driver, tlio car at a furious pace along the Hiitt lioad, and with having committed a 'breach of the motor regulations in that he had retained a wrong number on his motor-car. The charges related to different dates. It was stated that defendant had bought a motor-car, and in ignoring of the regulations had retained the number belonging to the original owner. In respect to the / charge of leaving the car standing ontside the hotyl defendant stated that ho was waiting for a passenger to pay her faro. On this information defendant was fined' .£2, with, costs 17s. 6d,; for furious driving ho was ordered to pay 205., with 76. costs; and for the breach of tho motor regulations he was fined 10s., with 7s. coks. A further charge of being found , on licensed premises after tho hours of closingVas dismissed. Mr. E. F. O'Leary appeared for defendant.
Joseph Henning and C. M. M'Konzio were each lined 4fls., with 17s. 6d. costs, for failing to have lights oe their motorcars.
For having insufficient lights on vehicles, Harry Harris and Lars Kupert Hallgron were each fined !oa., with 17s. Cd. costs. '
A youth Darned Frederick G. King was ordered to pay ss. costs for riding a motor-cycle on the Hutt Eoad cycle track.
James Diggs wns fined 10s., with costs 75., for driving a cart on the wrong siu'e of the plantation in Courtonay Place. Robert Hall was fined 2s. 6d., with 17s. Cd. costs, for permitting iv chimney to catch fire. On an information of riding a bicycle without lights on the Hutt lioad, Michael Joseph Cleary was fined 10s., with costs 7s. For driving a vehicle at an excessive speed, Donald Dobson was fined £i, with costs £1 sa. Gd. Ernest Cmnningham was fined 145., with costs 75., for driving a vehicle on the Hutt Road without lights. For a .like offence, Henry Pratley was mulcted in a similar penalty.
