' Mi's. Brown, who died at Dunedin on Saturday, was the widow of Mr. John Brown, and a very old resident of Dunedin. With her lrusbandj she arrived at Port Chalmers in the Stratfieldsaye in 1658. Mi's. Brown is survived by five of a family—Mr. James Brown, the •wellknown accountant of Dunedin; Mr. George Brown, representative of A. and T. Burt in the North Island; Mr. Robert Brown, of Dunedin; Mr. AVilliam Brown, manager of the Stono Works at Oamaru; and Mrs. Craig, of Invorcargill.

In connection with the "Our Day" Copper Trail challenge—Wellington to Auckland— the girls of the Hunterville district are organising a children's fancy dress ball to bo hold on Friday, September 6. The function promises to be a great success, both from a spectacular and a financial point of view. A prize will be given for .the least expensive and most original costume for boy and girl.

The engagement is announced of Lieutenant E. B. Blnck, son of Mr. and Mrs. G. J. Black, Haiti, Gisborne, to Sister Lanser, of Australia. Lieutenant Black received the Military Cross in Egypt. The presentation was made by General Chaytor. Lieutenant Black has also received another military reward. Ho left in 181-1 with the Legion of Frontiersmen, under Captain Twistleton, and has had nearly four years' active service. He is expected to arrive in New Zealand shortly.
