HAZEL REPTON DISABLED. Three accidents huve occurred to the scow Hazel liepton (142 tons) in a few days over a month, while the lias been voyaging up the coast- l'rom Dunedin bournl for .Melbourne with a load of timber. At about 11.30 a.m. yesterday she anchored in the stream at Wellington for repairs to her centre-board, which was damaged while she was between Lyttelton and Wellington Ileadß. Tlio vessel left Hie Canter, mry port on Saturday last, and early yesterday mormui; was sighted two miles oil the entrance. She came into port under canvas. A new centre-board will lie liiteii, which will mean several days in porl, when another start for her overseas destination will be made.
The scow lelt Duncrtin ;m July 12 with a cargo of timber, lose her gatt when oil 'i'imaru the following day, ami as a consenuence was obliged to return to Port Chalmers, where she was equipped with a new gall. She resumed her voyage on Thursday, July 18. But in the course of her passage she was again overtaken by misfortune. Tossed and buffeted before a sweeping gale, she was struck vertically by a squall as she gybed, carrying away her fore-boom, and necessitating her heading towards Lyttelton, the nearest port, lor shelter. A new boom had to be iitted, • mi two lifeboats, which had been damaged by heavy seas, were repaired. STHANDINC! OF IFAIvAMEO. Evidence, taken at- Sydney on August 6. in connection wiili the stranding of lilt steamer Makambo, showed that the vessel, on tho night of June 14 last, wenton to a reef on the north end of Lord llowo Island. Tile master, Harold de Capell Wctherall, who at the limo was in charge, bad collapsed in a fainting lit. The night was fine and tho sea smooth. A lifeboat was lowered, and a lady passenger, while stepping from the steamer, feTi into the sea and was drowned. The Makambo floated till the reef and was beached on a sandy bottom, where, she was salved ten days later. The damage to the steamer is estimated at about £12,000. Tho Oourt found that the grounding was caused by the master losing control of tin: ship through a seizure which rendered him unconscious for a period. There was no pvidonen Hint thts seizure was due. in misconduct; tho Court, therefore, would not interfero with the master's certificate. Tho Court, however, considered that the master should bn censured for not taking precautions for the safety of the Bliip, as ho must have known, from previous experience. that lie was liable to such attacks, and he should have, requested the second oHiet'r {n iic ou the bridge with hi.ii from the tin)* of leaving the moorings. till the vessel wi;l dear of all danger. He was accordingly reprimanded. Apart from the consolidation of the Canard Line's interests ou various ocean routes, it is now crccting or buying premises at many of the world's principal ports. Tito most important, of these will he at Now York, the cost of tho work being estimated at nearly a million and a half sterling. Provision has also been made for offices at San Francisco and Vancouver (which seems to confirm tho report that the Ounard Line intends to maintain a service on the Pacific), and at Copenhagen and Got«nburg. whilst at Wellington, a building i? nearins, completion.
