REDSKINS IN ACTION
WARPAINT AND MATHERS ON THE WESTERN i'RONT. Mr. Raymond Can'oll, "The Times" correspondent at American Headquarters, says that Red Men, including officers, gave a picturesquo touch to the recent fighting in ihoH'orests norlli of Chateau Thierry. JChaki and mushroom helmets were replaced by ancestral warpaint and feathers, bui. tho Indian battlecry 'of liberty was tlio same as that of their white brothers. They all adhered to their traditions, were unexcelled in bravery, and did not dream of surrender. A full-blooded Indian sergeant, a college graduate, vividly describes the fighting in Hie open country towards Nesle, in which twenty famous scouts from tlio Dakota reservation liercely shared in tho struggle. The chief fell, and as lie lay dying ho called out, "Keep to tlio trail, boys!" Six of theso Redskins crept thrco miles to the German lines ni night and peeped in tho windows of a chateau, and saw a party- of officers enjoying an elaborate wine banquet.' With blood-curdling whoops the scouts dashe.d grenades through the windows and escaped. They laconically reported that there was a heap of noise inside, aud perhaps there was a heap of dead.
