NOTES AND COMMENTS
fBY GLENCOB.I Nominations for all events at tho Marton Spring Meeting: (to be held 011 Septcmber 4) close on Friday next, at 9 p.m., with the secretary (Mr. Arthur Way). The good showing of Yellow and Black on Saturday, when he carried over 12st. iu a schooling gallop with St. Elmu, Col* lector, and Nita. aud beat them pointier over a couplc of rounds, has made tho iiawke'B Bay representative a good eleventh hour fancy for the National Steeplechase. •He is to bo ridden by J. Deerey. The withdrawal from the Winter Cup of the locally-owned Miss de Yal was not unexpected, as the All lted inare has been oil the tracks for some time and was not sent to lticcarton. She is continually going sore in front, and will have to be spelled. So'far, A. Hall has not made up his mind whether to appeal against the decision of the Manawatu Racing Club, but his friends are insistent that he should do so, and it is probable Wangauui owner will yield to their wishes. Thero are no defections of any note from the field for the big events at lticcarton to-morrow, and all the well-fancied candidates will go to the post.
The annual football match between tho North Island and South Island jockeys was witnessed by a large crowd of spectators. After-an exciting contest the North Island won by three noints to nil, Stan. Eeid scoring a try for the winners.
Melbourne papers to hand by this week • moil mention that the well-known trainer, Hoiiald Cameron, formerly of New Zealand, is laid up with a rather severe attack of pleurisy.
jrr. W. Kandcll has been appointed clerk of tho scales to the Feilding Jockey Club, tho former occupant of the position, Mr. L. Gorton/ having gouc into camp. Mr. Kandell has filled a similar position for tho Manawatu liacinc Club for 30 years, a record that will be hard to boat in the Dominion.
Coalition, who will represent Wellington in tho National Steeplechase to-morrow, has got through a vcrv thorough preparation, and be should be one of tho fittest horses.in the race.- The Patromts gelding is a very fine fencer, and Unless he meets with bad luck, lie appears to be one of tlioso that are sure to complete the course.
At the annual meeting of members of tho Manawatu Racing Club, held on Monday evening, Mr. J. Goring Johnston was elected presidont for tho ensuing year. A vote of thanks was passed to the retiring president, Mr. H. R. Cooper. In discussing. the allocation of profits for the coming season, Mr. Jphnston explained that tho amount devoted to patriotic funds could not be on the same scale tliiß year as the club must carry out extensive ronovations to its buildings.
Brambletye has been going lame off and on for some time past, so her defection from the Winter Can was fully exjiectcd. The Ohokcborc stable will be represented by Gamecock, who was a high-class two-year-old, but, his form' last season was very disappointing. ' '
Although (says an English writer) tho Derby put thc : stamp of versatility on Gainsborough, more especially in tho eyes of those who.ua«■ the race from beginning to end, it was left for the Newmarket Gold Oup to show his extreme likeness to his sire. Not that Gainsborough resemblcß Bayardo ill make and shape, for the son is built, on even more sturdy lines than was the sire, but that peculiar gift of getting out of difficulties which Bayardo demonstrated on so many occasions has obviously been inherited in greater degree by this latest champion of tho Hampton line than by any other representative of this ißrticular family. It iB true that in beating Planet and Dansellon, Oliilds was never in anv sort- of trouble on Gainsborough, but. the manner of his winning proved his nippiness of action as might never have been revealed in a larger field. As a result,of his excellent track work since arriving at Kiccarton, Gang Awa' is now first fancy for tho Grand NationaJ Hurdles. Owing to ,T. Campbell not being able to rido at lticcarton, another jockey will havo to be obtained for Multaine.
