PETONE AFFAIRS

MEETING OF THJ COUNCIL.

Tho Potone Borough Council met last evening. There were present the Mnyor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan), Councillors C. P. Brocklebiink, J. Churchouse, J. Fostaf, S. Newlantl, J. M'Dotignll, D. M'Kenzie, B. 11. Jones, and E. Tovey.

The following rates were confirmed:— General, 2J(1.; special, 121-Gld.; separate, 1131-IGBd.; hospital, 7-aW.

It was decided to accopt an invitation from the Wellington Hospital Board to attend tho/ ceremony of the laying of the memorial stone at the new fever hospital on August 15.

Tho health inspector reported three cases of scarlet fever and ono of tuberculosis.

Tho Public Trust Office wrote inquiring what would be the approximate annual payment the council would renuire for the maintenance of the private streets upon the Gear Estate. ,The council decidcd that it would get a report from its engineer.

' An opinion was received from the so■licitoj' to the Municipal Association to the effect that the council could not invest a purchasing clmifc in a lease unless legislation was passed for the purpose.

Councillor .Tqups reported that ho and Councillor Npwlaml had interviewed the railway authorities with a view to improving the system of issuing tickets at Petone railway station. Mr. Bevan, of the Railway Department, had agreed that a. new system would be instituted oil Saturday next. Complaint had been made also about cortain trains over-Tun-ning the platform, and thus compelling passengers to alight in a dangerous place. Mr. Bevan had said that instructions would be given to prevent the trains over-running tho platform. The engineer reported the i6«ue of nine building permits. The total vnluo of the buildings wa? set down at <£727.

The borough inspector reported that on July 13 he was on duty all day taking the times of motors with a view to prosecuting drivers who exceeded the speed limit.
